Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - New Product Development
The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for developing new fluid film bearings and auxiliary components for wind turbines. As a member of a small but growing team, they will contribute to multiple areas of product development including advanced mathematical modelling, bearing design development, test rig development, and verification and validation of design via testing and product certification. Problems faced will be complex; projects will be managed with limited oversight from the Technical Manager. They will assist/instruct Design Engineers and check drawings for accuracy of design intent and information. The Senior Project Engineer will also guide and mentor junior members of the engineering team, lead design reviews, prepare DFMEAs, write engineering standards, and develop new design processes & tools. Wind turbine engineering experience is desired but not mandatory. A strong foundation in mechanical engineering concepts and the ability to approach problems using first principles is most important.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Chartered Engineer (CEng) preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years work experience in an engineered product environment, specialized in industrial mechanical machinery manufacturing, ideally involving high-speed rotating components, fluid film bearings, and seals with high dimensional tolerances.
- A background with experience in tribology.
- Strong understanding and application of engineering principles and design practices.
- Strong understanding of product failure modes and excellent, proven problem-solving skills.
- Mathematical Skills - Ability to parametrically model complex, non-linear mechanical engineering concepts, primarily focused on structural and fluid dynamics.
- Computer Skills - Proficiency with MS Office and Windows operating systems is expected. Must have advanced skills with 3D modelling and FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or COMSOL. Experience with data analysis & simulation using MATLAB is highly desired.
- Reasoning - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, specifications, and governmental regulations.
- Good oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and peers.
Note: Occasional travel away will be required to customer and end-user locations, conferences, and other DPC sites (10-15%).
What You'll Do
- Prepare concept design proposals for new products; identify requirements, analyze alternative concepts, and determine optimum solutions to meet project requirements.
- Model complex fluid film bearing behaviour in wind turbines.
- Carry out stress analysis using techniques appropriate for the nature and complexity of the problem, including classical methods or Finite Element Analysis.
- Prepare technical reports outlining the calculations and assumptions used in evaluating the integrity of new designs and prepare DFMEAs.
- Develop test specifications, monitor product testing, analyze test data, and prepare test reports.
- Build and maintain an understanding of our manufacturing capabilities and standard design practices to produce the best-cost alternative for the customer and the company.
- Interpret designs, assist/instruct Design Engineers, perform engineering calculations, examine specifications, expedite and process engineering changes, and check general arrangement and component drawings for accuracy.
- Create analytical methods for new products and product enhancements and document standard work processes, engineering standards, procedures, and tools.
- Provide guidance and mentor junior engineers, lead design reviews, and oversee improvement projects.
- Support manufacturing personnel with evaluations of deviated components, corrective action investigations, and other quality-related activities.
- Assist supply chain and quality engineers when evaluating new suppliers.
- Support engineering process development and design for manufacturability efforts through specific assignments as directed by the Director of Engineering.
- Independently responsible for meeting deadlines necessary to support the company’s commitments to customers and manufacturing operations.
