Job Description:

The Ethical and Sustainable Value Chains Team at De Beers is a dynamic and diverse team striving to advance practices in the diamond value chain and protect consumer confidence in natural diamonds. This role is a fixed term contract for 12 months.

In this role, you will report to the Head of the Department and work closely with them, including on the following:

  1. Support the Head of Department in the integration of existing and new frameworks and initiatives that establish ethical, sustainable and transparent value chains to support commercial projects, meeting legislative requirements and stakeholder expectations.
  2. Evolve, establish and implement ethical and due diligence mechanisms related to the diamond value chain and De Beers’ business models across its group companies.
  3. Support in establishing human rights due diligence processes that meet existing and emerging human rights legislative requirements and other key best practice frameworks, and lead on the implementation of related workstreams.
  4. Chair and lead the De Beers Human Rights Working Group.
  5. Provide leadership, advice and direction to the Best Practice Principles, Responsible Sourcing and Due Diligence team in support of the legislative and commercial commitments covering AML and Business Integrity issues, human rights due diligence, ethical practices and responsible sourcing standards and policy.
  6. Contribute to team development, motivation and engagement.
  7. Lead and provide technical expertise, solutions, recommendations and management of ethical standards.
  8. Benchmark the De Beers Best Practice Principles (BPP) standards against other key standards and make recommendations to elevate and align the BPPs in consideration of meeting stakeholder expectations while managing business risk.
  9. Advise on and implement changes to the BPP Programme, including design and overseeing a full change management strategy.
  10. Lead the review and engage with appropriate internal stakeholders on any changing regulatory or legislative frameworks as they relate to human rights due diligence, anti-money laundering or other reputational and ethical integrity requirements as applicable to the team’s workstreams.
  11. Establish and advise on strategy for new processes, policies, and approaches, including developing criteria and documentation that is implemented into the delivery of the Practice Principles (BPP) Programme.
  12. Build the De Beers ‘ethical integrity’ brand through supporting the establishment of the programme requirements for responsible sourcing in the jewellery supply chain that is aligned with the Best Practice Principles Programme and other industry standards.
  13. Oversee the implementation and evolution of the Responsible Sourcing policies for diamonds, precious metals, minerals and other gemstones across De Beers’ downstream brands.
  14. Oversee the Building Forever commitments and reporting (internal and external) as they relate to BPPs, Human Rights and Responsible Sourcing.
  15. Lead on the delivery of the Group’s Modern Slavery Act Statement and other applicable reporting requirements.
  16. Manage due diligence needs across De Beers Group as they relate to ethical, legal and reputational issues, including anti-money laundering, sanctions, human rights, and environmental risks within the context of existing and potential new business relationships.

Qualifications:

  1. Degree or professional qualification in a relevant discipline is essential, or sufficient work experience in the field is essential.
  2. Extensive experience in managing ethical/ESG value chain initiatives.
  3. Strong experience in setting and managing standards through multi-initiative processes and multi-stakeholder engagements.
  4. Extensive experience in programme and project management.
  5. Extensive experience in ESG and/or Human Rights and/or Due Diligence policy setting and programme implementation.
  6. Experience in handling complex systems and workstreams.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills is essential.
  8. Sound knowledge of business principles and international standards relevant to the industry (e.g. human rights and anti-discrimination laws, labour law) is essential.
  9. Numerate with good presentation skills.
  10. Strong knowledge of the Responsible Jewellery Council requirements.
  11. Travel may be required.
