Job description

This Senior Legal Counsel role is a permanent position with a major, international energy company based in the centre of Aberdeen (flexible working is available). The role holder will be an integral member of the Leadership Team, providing legal advice to support the group's business operations, ensuring compliance, and mitigating risks, while also steering and influencing the future of the business.

The job involves developing legal strategies, managing complex transactions, and overseeing legal matters across all territories, primarily the UK. The position requires strong commercial skills, business acumen, and the ability to build effective relationships. The SLC also serves as Company Secretary and Data Protection Officer, ensuring compliance with corporate and safety standards.

Overview

The provision of general legal advice and assistance to all areas of the Group, International & UK Entities to enable the organisation to conduct its business legally and ethically.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Presenting legal advice to company Board, Regional Team EMEA, Portfolio Directors, and Heads Of Department.
  2. In conjunction with General Counsel, develop long-term strategies aligned to Group Management Team (GMT) vision.
  3. Responsible for identifying and advising the company on complex legal issues associated with the implementation of the corporate strategy and the mitigation of identified risks.
  4. Ensuring that the company is not unnecessarily exposed to legal claims by providing appropriate legal advice and managing complex legal transactions.
  5. In conjunction with General Counsel, evolve new territory entry processes and take responsibility for the company’s legal compliance, agency agreements, and other legal matters as we look to move into new regions.
  6. Curating and managing global legal partnerships with external counsel, maximising value across each engagement.
  7. Reviewing, supporting in the negotiation of, and where applicable, drafting a range of commercial agreements in conjunction with Contracts Manager/wider commercial team.
  8. Managing commercial compliance in terms of existing agreements and developing a compliance process for emerging agreements.
  9. Facilitating and verifying that relevant analysis has been undertaken within the group to evaluate risks relevant to commercial matters.
  10. Function as Company Secretary where applicable.
  11. Function as Data Protection Officer (DPO).
  12. Undertaking any other duties as may be reasonably required provided you have the necessary training and competency levels.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies

  1. Law degree.
  2. Experienced Legal Advisor with previous significant experience gained within an industry role and/or a respected private practice firm.
  3. Previous experience in an in-house role would be preferred.
  4. Competent in Microsoft Office packages.
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build strong working relationships with all levels and influence and collaborate with others with ease.
