Applications are invited for an exciting new opportunity to work with the Bangor Business School, both in the UK and in China. The successful applicant will split their time between Bangor and China, with the expectation that teaching time in China will likely form the most substantive part of the role.

Bangor has a long-established reputation for high quality research and teaching in Banking, Finance and Economics. The School is seeking to appoint a senior level academic to support the expansion of its TNE programmes both in the UK, and in China.

Successful candidates will be expected to support the continued growth of our Banking & Finance Undergraduate programme, taught at ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY of FINANCE & ECONOMICS (ZUFE) in China. The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills and substantial experience of teaching quantitative modules.

Candidates should be outstanding scholars with an excellent teaching and research record, and clearly defined research plans for the next REF. The successful candidate will have substantial teaching experience in HE and evidence of high level quality publications in one or more fields of Banking, Finance, Data Analytics and Economics, as well as a successful record in significant grant capture. They will be expected to lead and be part of influential national and international networks in their fields.

Overview

Bangor Business School is research-active and devoted to teaching excellence. The school has a very supportive ethos, which builds a strong academic community where people want to work.

Our Banking & Finance academics collaborate actively with colleagues from other subject areas within the Business School, as well as having extensive collaborations beyond Bangor University, including with regulators and policymakers. Research interests currently pursued within the group include Financial Innovation and Data Analytics, Tax and Welfare, Banking, and Credit Risk. Research planning groups pursuing these themes are primarily located in the Institute of European Finance (https://www.bangor.ac.uk/bbs/research/ief), which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023.

Bangor Business School provides a wide range of financial databases, including Bloomberg, Capital IQ Pro and RatingsDirect. We have a newly refurbished Trading Room, which is a state-of-the-art facility incorporating Bloomberg and Refinitiv Eikon, that enables students to experience real-world trading and financial research activities.

Purpose of the Job

  • To continue to build upon the School’s excellent reputation in teaching and research, both in the UK and China.
  • To nurture and develop both established and new relationships with professional and overseas partners.
  • To deliver quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels which engages students and will establish a record of teaching excellence at all levels. This teaching will be delivered primarily in China.
  • To conduct research of an international standard in a relevant field, with substantial evidence of quality and international peer recognition.
  • To engage in grant capture activities and to contribute significantly to national and international networks.
  • To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of projects, primarily in China.
  • To perform administrative tasks effectively as designated by the Head of School.
Teaching Duties Will Include:

  • Delivering teaching, supervision and pastoral care, primarily in China.
  • Planning, preparing and delivering lectures and seminars at undergraduate and postgraduate level, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes including delivery of quality modules that attract, engage and retain students.
  • Motivating students to proactive engagement in learning, and providing meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work within agreed time constraints.
  • Examining and supervising / co-supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including supervision of PhD’s to completion and undertaking PhD examining in the UK and internationally.
  • Keeping abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments.
  • Ensuring that all students are provided with a supportive learning environment and provide advice and guidance to individual students.
  • Building links with external agencies to provide work experience for students that could lead towards them gaining an additional professionally recognised qualification.
  • The development of innovative and appropriate teaching and assessment techniques and skills, influencing the pedagogy of the subject.
  • Be involved in curriculum development and design in line with market demands.
  • Be involved in the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Develop collaboration in terms of teaching across subject and disciplinary boundaries, maintaining and developing scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.

Research Duties Will Include:

  • Continue their programme of research in Banking, Finance, Data Analytics and/or Economics that is internationally excellent in terms of quality and impact.
  • Contribute to the development of research strategies at School and College level.
  • Membership of national committees and editorial boards.
  • Being a regular reviewer for respected international journals.
  • Personal research, and/or collaborative research with colleagues in the School or across the College / University.
  • Maintaining an active research programme leading to publications at a level of international excellence, while developing plans and applying for external funding.
  • Contributing to the research environment of the School through publication, conference contributions, research seminars and other research activities.
  • Engaging in grant capture activities and contributing significantly towards the School’s capability to attract external research funding.
  • Generating impact of scholarly activity beyond academia.
  • Disseminating and publishing results of research (as lead author) in high quality, leading, peer-reviewed publications appropriate to the subject area.
  • Supervision of research students.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

Administrative duties will include:

  • Contributing to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
  • Leadership in external activities with the development of projects which create impact, working with communities, businesses and employers.
  • Taking responsibility for specific modules as appropriate, working towards ensuring optimum module evaluation results.
  • Maintaining accurate records and contributing to the working of the committee structures of the School and College.
  • Contributing to the organisation of School conferences and/or research seminars.
  • Liaising and working with other staff positively within the College and the University, and other bodies as required.
