Job Summary

The Citigroup Services Legal Department (Services Legal) comprises over 110 FTE located across all time zones. Services Legal supports the Services Business, which is one of the 5 core business segments at Citi, comprising Treasury & Trade Solutions and Securities Services. It serves an extensive client base of multinational corporations, financial institutions, and public sector organisations, with a truly global presence.

Services Legal is seeking a motivated and versatile individual to support the senior lawyer responsible for Client Solutions and Business Strategies and Initiatives (the “Legal BSI Head”). This role presents a rare opportunity for a talented lawyer to assist the Legal BSI Head in coordination, planning, and oversight, connecting the Services Legal team with the Business regarding its priorities, initiatives, and challenges.

The role requires a person with a strategic aptitude to work on a broad range of matters. The individual will collaborate closely with the Legal BSI Head in responding to Business initiatives, which will vary in complexity and scope. While the role will focus primarily on business-facing tasks, it will also address the priorities of Services Legal, especially in knowledge consolidation, training development, precedents, best practices, and the use of new technologies to simplify the team’s operating model. Additionally, the role will foster collaboration with the wider Citi Legal Department, particularly with other Legal department Business Strategies and Initiatives Leads, Global Legal Solutions, and the Regulatory Advisory Team.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of all elements of Cash, Trade, and Securities Services and the associated risks and controls that these Businesses need to manage, both as a whole and on a cluster-by-cluster basis, reflecting the nature of a business operating in over 100 countries, processing payments, clearing, and settling trillions of assets each day.

The position can be based in any of our Global Offices and may require occasional travel.


What you’ll do:

Services Legal BSI is a new function designed to identify and address common themes across a Services business that is undergoing refresh, consolidation, and harmonisation.

Within the BSI “zone,” the successful candidate will develop a strong understanding of the strategic direction and priorities of the Services Business. Key elements include a relentless focus on the global client experience, delivering a diverse range of Services products across geographical borders, business data, automation, digital strategies, best practices in business risk and controls, governance, escalation, decision-making, and the regulatory change environment affecting Services. The candidate will translate these priorities into a Services Legal common approach to advising the Business on legal risk and will work closely with other areas within GLAC to ensure that the Services Legal operating model is clearly articulated and consistently applied.

Services Legal BSI has three essential components:

  • “Client Solutions”: developing common ground and best practices across our documentation and memorialising the legal principles underpinning these.
  • “All Services” Digital initiatives: providing legal advice to any of the Cash, Trade, or Securities Services Businesses involving digital assets, blockchain, tokenisation, and working with technology companies and strategic investment partners, while also improving Services Legal’s own processes through technology solutions.
  • “Pure” BSI: connecting the Services Business with its lawyers across several distinct areas of expertise.

By way of example, this will include:

  • Identifying and maintaining analyses of the laws and regulations impacting all Services Businesses and their operational, financial, competitive, and reputational positioning, facilitating a common understanding with Business colleagues, advocating participation in industry groups, and educating clients on the impact of these regulations.
  • Understanding and advising on the risks, controls, and policies of the Services Business, including legal entity usage/booking, good governance, and decision-making. The role will support both the Services Business and Services Legal in executing and overseeing enterprise escalation control standards, frameworks, MCAs, reporting, tools, and escalation oversight.

What we’ll need from you:

  • Active involvement in and oversight of departmental program management and strategic initiatives.
  • Ability to design and implement regulatory, control, and governance-driven initiatives and business change projects, including developing appropriate policies, managing procedures, and controls.
  • Direct support to the Services Legal BSI Head, with active liaison with the Services Legal Senior Management Team.
  • Collaboration with colleagues in the wider Legal Department to identify and resolve organizational issues and areas for improvement, particularly those that can be enhanced through legal technology.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent experience.
