Job Introduction
We are looking for a senior producer to play a leading role in a new team delivering a daily news podcast from BBC Scotland News which will launch in January 2025. The podcast will be published four days a week (Monday to Thursday) on BBC Sounds and other podcast platforms, as well as being broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. It will also be visualised for publication on BBC iPlayer and broadcast on TV (on BBC One Scotland and the BBC Scotland channel). The podcast will seek to cover stories and issues of interest and importance to news audiences in Scotland.
You will be working to the series producer and alongside presenter Martin Geissler and a team of producers.
Main Responsibilities
You will be the lead producer for individual episodes of the podcast, making key decisions about which stories to cover and in what form. You will simultaneously have an "on-air" role as a regular contributor from time to time. As a lead producer, you will need to be able to identify topics, treatments and interviewees with the potential to attract audiences to a new news podcast. As a regular contributor, you will need to be comfortable and confident discussing a range of news stories in an informal manner. You will also be expected to have ideas for how the podcast can make an impact beyond its native platforms, particularly on social media and the BBC website.
Are you the right candidate?
You should have a track record working as a senior producer and/or reporter in professional newsrooms, ideally covering stories of national importance or intrigue. You need to be deeply familiar with Scottish current and political affairs and have a thorough understanding of the Scottish legal system and media law as it applies in Scotland. A command of the BBC's editorial guidelines is equally essential. You should have a wealth of experience working for broadcast news programmes, ideally as an output producer; but if not, as item producer and/or field producer. As this role comes with "on air" duties, some experience of broadcasting on video or audio platforms, ideally podcasts, is desirable. Significant experience operating video and audio editing software such as Final Cut, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition and/or Avid Media Composer is equally desirable.
As a part of the application process, you are required to complete the following:
Using a file-sharing platform such as Dropbox or WeTransfer, please submit a video recording of yourself talking about a news and current affairs podcast you admire to benita.dsouza@bbc.co.uk. The duration of the video should be no longer than 60 seconds.
