Job description

Job Description

Role: Senior Electronics Engineer - Hardware

Location: Peterlee, UK

Salary: £50,000 - £55,000 per annum (DOE)

Type: Full-time, Permanent

About Us

At Alexander Battery Technologies (ABT), we design and manufacture custom battery packs for some of the world’s most demanding applications — from drones and robotics to off-road vehicles, safety equipment, and power tools. We’re expanding fast across the UK, Europe, and North America, and we’re investing in the next of high-voltage systems, functional safety design, and end-to-end battery innovation.

We’re looking for someone to take the lead on new product development and help drive our hardware team into the future.

Job Summary

This isn’t a back-office design role. It’s a hands-on, lead-from-the-front position where you’ll:

  1. Define customer requirements (sometimes from scratch)
  2. Own the full design flow in Altium 365
  3. Build, test, iterate and validate with safety and quality in mind
  4. Research and advise on regulatory compliance across global markets
  5. Deliver new hardware products into production

You’ll work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and project leads. You’ll be trusted to make design decisions — and expected to drive projects forward.

Duties

  1. Lead hardware development from requirements through to production
  2. Collaborate with the project engineer to define scope, timelines and delivery plans
  3. Make robust component choices, design PCBs in Altium 365, and oversee prototyping and test
  4. Conduct hazard and risk analysis, support FMEA and DFMEA as needed
  5. Ensure compliance with IEC 62619, UN38.3, CE, and IEC 61508
  6. Contribute to functional safety efforts in upcoming high-voltage battery platforms
  7. Occasionally support customer discussions or on-site visits
  8. Maintain a zero-compromise attitude on safety, traceability, and quality

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering or a related field
  2. 5+ years in electronics hardware design and NPI
  3. Proven experience taking products from concept to production
  4. Strong knowledge of high-voltage systems and/or battery applications
  5. Solid understanding of functional safety principles (SIL)
  6. Experience working with international regulations and compliance
  7. Proficiency in Altium 365 and PCB development best practices
  8. Confident communicator, methodical problem-solver, and self-starter
  9. Ability to lead by example, own your work, and hit delivery targets

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means owning hardware design projects end-to-end, driving them into production, and setting the bar for quality and accountability. It’s not a support role — it’s a lead-from-the-front role.

A Word from Our CEO

“We don’t need someone to just spec parts and hand off designs. We need a hands-on problem solver who owns the product from idea to build — someone who’s hungry to lead, not afraid to fail forward, and cares deeply about safety, quality, and getting things right for the customer.”

Mark Rutherford, CEO at Alexander Battery Technologies
