Role: Electrical Controls & Instrumentation Designer

Location: Huddersfield - West Yorkshire

Permanent role

Key Objectives

  1. To take ownership and responsibility for the execution of all assigned work.
  2. To deliver fit for purpose, practical Engineering design in line with specification, budget and programme.
  3. To support and promote all company and client site directives – HSEQ, best practice, innovations, continual improvement.
  4. To develop and retain excellent working relationships with key stakeholders.
  5. To maintain up to date knowledge and competence to support the role and to align to client’s and industries’ requirements and directives.

Main Activities

  1. Produce new and update existing detailed EC&I design documentation; typically - loop diagrams, control panel schematics, field connection diagrams, I/O schedules, control circuits, failsafe circuits, LV power distribution & protection, single line diagrams, control panel GAs and layouts, instrument air distribution and control, instrument air system layouts, instrumentation hook-ups, functional testing procedures.
  2. Comply with both company and site standards.
  3. Carry out site surveys.
  4. Compile document work packs.
  5. Comply with company and site procedures; typically – Engineering design, project control, documentation control, procurement, verification.
  6. Support other activities; typically – estimating, commissioning, hand-over, procurement.
  7. Contribute to team(s) to support continual improvement.
  8. Work independently, using own initiative.

Qualifications / Experience

Required

  1. ONC / HNC or equivalent in Electrical / Control / Instrumentation Engineering discipline.

Preferable

  1. HSEQ qualification (i.e. IOSH).
  2. CompEx – ExF (foundation), EXF+ (foundation plus) or Ex01-04 (Gas & Vapours), Ex05-06 (Dust), or Ex12 (Application Design Engineers).
  3. Functional Safety, IEC61508 – TUV or equivalent.
  4. BS7671:2018 IET Wiring Regulations - C&G2382-15 or equivalent.
  5. CDM regulations.

Experience & Knowledge

  1. 5 years recent experience in an equivalent role.
  2. Industrial sector Engineering.
  3. COMAH Tier 1 Process Manufacturing Environment.
  4. Functional Safety.
  5. ATEX directive.
  6. Projects.
  7. Engineering design process – scope, specification, site survey, detailed design, design review, design approval, issue for construction, commissioning, “as built” documentation.
  8. Document control processes – review, approval, issue, revision.
  9. EC&I Engineering documentation – loop diagrams, control panel schematics, filed connection diagrams, I/O schedules, control circuits, failsafe circuits, LV power distribution & protection, single line diagrams, control panel GAs and layouts, instrument air distribution and control, instrument air system layouts, instrumentation hook-ups, functional testing procedures.
  10. PLC and DCS systems.
  11. Equipment and material specification.
  12. Procurement & expediting processes.
  13. Installation processes – site surveys and measures, installation instructions, “as built” records.
  14. Query processes – TQs, CVIs.
  15. Verification processes – pre-commissioning, commissioning, hand-over.
  16. Commercial processes – estimating, budget, programme.
  17. CDM project lifecycle.
  18. Strong PC skills – AutoCAD, MS Office, drafting tools, document databases, specialist Engineering design tools.

  1. Client: Project Manager(s), Technical Authorities, Engineering admin & support team, SHEQ personnel, Plant engineering team(s), Plant production team(s), Process engineering dept, Planning dept, Procurement dept.
  2. Altrad: Site Management (Engineering and Construction), Site teams (Engineering and Construction), Technical Authorities, Peers (similar roles from other sites), Support services (SHEQ, training, HR, etc).
  3. Other: Professional Bodies, Suppliers – materials and equipment.
