Senior Ecologist

SAS Rope and Rail Ltd is a leading specialist infrastructure contractor dedicated to providing innovative and sustainable solutions to our clients. We specialise in large infrastructure projects and are currently looking to expand our ecology services.

The Senior Ecologist will lead and manage ecological projects, providing expert advice and support to clients and stakeholders. This role involves conducting ecological surveys, assessments, and developing mitigation strategies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote biodiversity.

Salary: up to 35,000 DOE + 30 days holidays + bonus scheme

Job Type: Full time, permanent, hybrid

Hours: Monday to Friday 40 hours per week

Location: Kent/ Southeast with travel to other sites.

Role Responsibilities
  • Conduct ecological surveys and assessments, including habitat and species surveys.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage ecological projects from inception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Ecological Surveys: Conduct and oversee surveys for protected species, habitats, and ecological impact assessments.
  • Reporting: Prepare detailed ecological reports, including Preliminary Ecological Assessments (PEA), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity Net Gains reports (BNG/ BNL), and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA).
  • Mitigation Strategies: Develop and implement mitigation strategies for protected species and habitats.
  • Client Liaison: Provide expert advice to clients, including developers, landowners, and local authorities, ensuring clear communication and understanding of ecological requirements.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and support junior ecologists, providing guidance and professional development opportunities, including subcontracted ecologists.
  • Compliance: Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation, planning policies, and industry standards (e.g., CIEEM, BS42020).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders, including statutory bodies, NGOs, and community groups, to promote ecological best practices.
  • Participate in fieldwork, data collection, and analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices.
  • Stay up-to-date with current ecological research and methodologies.
  • Additional administration duties, analysis, reporting, and projects as required.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in Ecology or Ecological consultancy or related discipline.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or equivalent professional body is desirable.
  • Survey licence for protected species e.g., bats, dormouse, barn owl etc.
  • Knowledge of local flora and fauna and a keen interest in botany.
  • Proficiency in using GIS and other relevant software.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity net gain.
  • Knowledgeable on environmental legislation and policies.
  • Highly organised, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive, strategic, and a multitasker.
