The Institute for Healthcare Improvement

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is an independent not-for-profit organisation based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. For 30 years, IHI has used improvement science to advance and sustain better outcomes in health and health systems across the world.

Position Summary :

The IHI is a global organisation and has a team that supports organisations across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region to accelerate the pace of improvement and achieve impactful results. Reporting to the Vice President, Asia Pacific, the Senior Director is responsible for a range of both strategic and operational activities to enhance IHI's impact, reach and vitality.

Position Responsibilities :

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :

Leadership and Staff Development

  • Provide leadership and support the APAC team to deliver impactful results, increase IHI's reach, ensure positive customer experiences, enhance staff vitality, and achieve financial goals.
  • Supervise, mentor and coach staff to reach their highest potential.
  • Support APAC team members in setting and regularly reviewing professional development plans.
  • Funnel decision-making downward, empowering staff and sharing ownership.
  • Actively contribute to staff development and long-term succession planning.

Relationship Management and Business Strategy

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, partners, and faculty.
  • Ensure customer loyalty throughout the business development and delivery process.
  • Work closely with partners and customers to design projects and programs that align with their strategic goals.
  • Use market intelligence and customer insights to identify and pursue potential partnerships.
  • Develop proposals that meet customer needs and align with IHI's mission.
  • Provide strategic insights, market and customer analysis, and recommendations.
  • Share learning and make recommendations to inform the evolution of IHI's content and organisational business strategy.
  • Consult with external organisations and senior leaders to cultivate, test, and implement system improvements.
  • Provide strategic guidance and effectively communicate complex topics.
  • Influence outcomes in challenging or complex conversations.

High-Level Project Management and Content Expertise

  • Build and lead effective internal and external teams to achieve impactful results.
  • Oversee the design, delivery and successful completion of a portfolio of strategically-aligned projects/programs.
  • Work with a range of senior leaders to provide strategic guidance.
  • Navigate and frequently switch gears among high-priority projects and content areas.

Project Direction, Design and Delivery

  • Lead the development of the vision, goals and design approach to successfully execute projects.
  • Work with Project Managers to support the development and deployment of project plans.
  • Work with Project Directors and other members of the core project team to oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Effectively apply IHI's core improvement science methodologies.
  • Remove barriers, problem solve and escalate issues to the Vice President, as needed.

Capability Building

  • Facilitate, synthesise, develop, and teach content areas internally and externally.
  • Deliver improvement science capability building sessions and programs.
  • Coach, mentor and develop clients and partners in the design, delivery and evaluation of improvement initiatives.
  • Support knowledge management and systems to enable effective learning.

Content Development and Dissemination

  • Identify and develop new opportunities for IHI content, programs, or products.
  • Develop and execute dissemination plans.

  • Experience in developing conceptual designs and writing proposals.
  • Ability to analyse quantitative/qualitative data and evidence.
  • Ability to navigate complex political situations.
  • Strong negotiation, decision making and delegation skills.
  • Cultural competence and ability to implement best practices.
  • Strong networks in the healthcare sector in a country and/or jurisdiction within the Asia Pacific region.

Position Qualifications

Required

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (i.e., Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred), and at least ten years experience.
  • Five to seven years of experience leading teams of professionals preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience as a Director leading large-scale initiatives.
  • A comprehensive understanding of health care systems.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Candidate must be located in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Training in or commitment to being trained in tools that support bringing an equity focus to our work.

Preferred

  • Ideally the candidate will have a recognised improvement science qualification.
