Job description

Senior Diagnostic Radiographer, Mammography and CT

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe's largest Oncology centres and was the world's first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education. This post is based at our Cavendish Square site where we see both private care and NHS patients. There are also sites in Chelsea and Sutton.

We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic radiographers for a senior diagnostic radiographer post (mammography and CT) for our Cavendish Square site in central London.

Key skills required:

  1. Postgraduate certificate in mammography.
  2. Core skills are required in mammography. CT training can be provided where required.
  3. Previous cannulation experience would be desirable.
  4. Applicants should be able to demonstrate post graduate experience sufficient for the role.

The successful candidate should be a highly motivated radiographer with good communication skills, who is keen to contribute positively to the imaging service at Cavendish Square. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to professional development and show a keen interest in the future of their profession and the diagnostic imaging services. They will be expected to support both the service and its staff in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging. In return, the successful applicant will be offered a high standard of support towards their career pathway.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach. The post holder will work as part of the senior radiographer team liaising with Radiologists and clinicians in charge of a patient. They will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with clinical nurse specialists, staff at other radiology sites and other departmental staff. They will also liaise with internal and external agencies.

It is essential that the post holder has post graduate experience in mammography. CT experience would be desirable. This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills. The key working relationships will be with other radiographers, superintendent radiographers on all radiology sites, radiology clerical and admin staff, clinical scientists, consultant radiologists and clinical referrers.

Job responsibilities

To ensure protocols and standards are maintained and improved to produce best diagnostic information and patient care. To perform imaging examinations as an operator under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. To follow the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) guidelines, local rules and the departmental standard operating procedures. To comply with accurate patient identification procedures. To ensure referrals are justified correctly and booked in a timely manner. To give advice where appropriate on the validity of requested examinations. To be aware of radiation safety when undertaking CT examinations and ensure the safety and protection of patients, staff and carers are adhered to. To perform standard equipment quality assurance (QA), record results accurately and alert the Superintendent radiographer/medical physics as required. To assess specific communication needs of individual patients and to ascertain from the patient, patients guardian or the referrer, patients suitability and consent for receipt of intravenous contrast media.
