Job description

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, highly motivated individual to join us at Norwich City Football Club, as a Senior Data Engineer, on a full-time, permanent contract within our newly established Football Analytics department. This role can either be based at our Training Centre in Norwich, or remotely.

Working closely with the Head of Football Analytics, the Senior Data Engineer will lead in the design, development and maintenance of the data infrastructure at Norwich City Football Club.

Live00:0003:1003:10 The successful candidate will lead the development and maintenance of scalable data pipelines within a cloud-based data warehouse solution, building and maintaining API integrations to ingest new data sources, in particular (but not limited to) optical and broadcast tracking, and GPS and event data from training and football matches.

Key tasks/responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development and maintenance of scalable data pipelines within a cloud-based data warehouse solution

  • Lead the building and maintenance of API integrations to ingest new data sources, in particular (but not limited to) optical and broadcast tracking, GPS and event data from training and football matches.

  • Ensure our system has a high data quality by monitoring the ETL processes, integrating data quality checks and analysing and eliminating error.

  • Build internal applications and tools to aid internal data collection

  • Continuously drive and improve the data infrastructure of the football club so that it remains future proof and forms a stable basis for reliable analytics

  • Work with data scientists and analysts to gather feedback and requirements for feature engineering, model deployment and other ETL improvements

  • Debug and tune any performance issues to ensure data is accessible in a timely manner

Qualifications/Experience

Essential

  • Master’s in computer science or equivalent

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a data engineer, machine learning engineer or data scientist with heavy data engineering experience

  • Advanced knowledge of cloud-based data warehousing solutions such as AWS or Snowflake

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of R and Python

  • Advanced knowledge of data orchestration tools

  • Experience and deployment of data models in production environments

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of using SQL to query data

  • Experience designing systems to store and query large data sets like tracking data

Desirable

  • Knowledge or familiarity of data visualisation tools such as Power BI or equivalent
  • Familiarity with common football data feeds
  • Familiarity with API design and development
  • Familiarity with data quality frameworks
