Job description

On behalf of The Ministry of Justice, we are looking for a Senior Data Architect (Inside IR35) for a 6 Month Hybrid contract based 2 days per week in London.

SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role; as a minimum, you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (and speed at which we require a postholder in situ), preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.

MoJ's Data Modelling and Engineering Team is made up of Data Engineers and Analytics Engineers: our Data Engineers build and maintain pipelines to extract from operational systems and load data to our Analytical Platform, and our Analytics Engineers model this data using dimensional modelling principles to provide useful and usable data to downstream users, including analysts, performance teams, and data scientists. Over time, this supports migration towards robust, automated, and maintainable downstream processes which deliver trusted analysis.

Historically, the legal aid data landscape is complex, and there is a current ambition across MoJ and LAA to modernise and stabilise in this area. MoJ Data and Analytics Engineering is a key part of this, and we intend to deliver modelled legal aid data to the Analytical Platform to enable seamless data access for analysis, resulting in trusted data products and confident data-driven decision making to promote access to justice.

In the short term, this will mean establishing connectivity with downstream data systems, exploring a new data layer for LAA, and conducting detailed analysis of user needs in a single area to feed into dimensional model design. By developing in a flexible manner with the right level of abstraction, this will enable expansion to bring a full range of analytically useful legal aid data onto the platform and eventual migration towards modern API-based data extraction.

We are looking for an experienced, collaborative Data Architect with exceptional data modelling skills, experience of producing relevant data models across multiple areas for analytical and operational purposes, and strong knowledge of data platform architecture.

Skills & experience:

Essential

1. Experience of working with stakeholders to interpret an organisation's needs with regards to their data models and representing this in a data architecture
2. Experience of designing data warehouses for analytical and BI purposes including data models (conceptual, logical, and physical) and metadata systems
3. Experience designing data architecture that deals with problems spanning different business areas
4. Experience of providing oversight and advice to other data and analytics engineers who are designing and producing data artefacts
5. Experience of supporting the management of data dictionaries
6. Experience of working with technical architects to understand and undertake data profiling and source system analysis
7. Experience of engaging and maintaining relationships with business stakeholders and cross-functional teams
8. Experience of designing data platforms to meet operational and analytical requirements

Desirable

1. Experience of using dbt, including implementing dbt best practices
2. Excellent SQL and jinja skills
3. Experience of programming in Python
4. Experience with cloud platforms, ideally AWS
5. Experience of building dashboards or data applications
6. Experience of building CI/CD workflows, ideally with GitHub Actions
