This role reports to the Director of Legal, Outdoor & Group.
Overview of job
As Senior Counsel, Technology, AdTech & Data, you will be the go-to legal expert for technology, AdTech, and overseeing data protection matters. You will work closely with teams across the business to support critical projects, from drafting and negotiating technology agreements to ensuring compliance with data protection regulations and negotiating podcast agreements.
This fixed-term role (4 days/week) is perfect for a highly skilled lawyer with at least 5 years PQE, seeking to make an impact in a dynamic and fast-evolving environment.

Responsibilities of the role
- Provide senior level legal support to Global’s Tech & Digital, Workspace and Data teams.
- Be the legal specialist and trusted advisor on contracts, legal and compliance issues relating to:
- Technology - including Software as a Service (SaaS), PaaS, software licensing, applications development, systems integration, agile development and technology consulting agreements and IP licensing agreements and artificial intelligence.
- AdTech – the tools and software used by Global (including on DAX and Global Player) to reach audiences, buy and sell ads programmatically and deliver and measure digital advertising campaigns, including agreements with supply side platforms, demand side platforms, agency trading desks, ad servers, data management providers, AdTech tool vendors and partners, DAX partnership agreements (e.g. streaming service contracts), listener insight ID (DAX Audiences and DAX ID), cross device matching and other analytical issues, CRM and SEO agreements, IAB and TCF advice.
- Personal Data – use of personal data across all Global’s technology, AdTech, digital products and business, including Global’s customer data platform.
- Support the Legal & Business Affairs Director with podcast agreements, enterprise agreements and supporting Captivate; Global’s podcast business.
- Work with and support the Data Privacy team to ensure compliance with data protection laws, including DPIAs, ROPAs, DPAs, DSARs and Data Sharing Agreements, data matching Agreements, data protection compliance across the business, dealing with data breaches, managing the data privacy inbox, cookie and privacy policies.
- Develop solutions to complex legal issues.
- Contribute to evaluations of new products and features for compliance with applicable laws.
- Ensure business activities are conducted in conformity with all applicable laws, regulations, internal policies and procedures, including those related to privacy, data security and processing, customer profiling, targeted advertising and data matching.
- Keep up to date on the latest developments in laws, regulation and industry trends applicable to AdTech, digital media and technology.
- Take decisions as to how to resource and prioritise the work in consultation with other stakeholders as needed.
- Prepare templates, processes and policies for technology and digital legal matters and deliver training to the business.
- Manage external legal spend for your matters in line with budget.

What you will need
- Experience as an in-house legal advisor used to working in a fast paced, dynamic and evolving environment, providing proactive, in depth, concise, clear and commercial advice to the business.
- Expertise in technology and AdTech contracts and strong commercial contracts drafting and negotiation skills.
- The skills and experience necessary to advise on a broad range of the legal issues related to technology and digital advertising business, including intellectual property, data protection, consumer protection and privacy issues in the context of advertising related technology.
- The ability to identify and remedy complex legal issues with limited assistance from external legal counsel, possessing foresight, intuition, and a confident approach to managing legal risk.
- A commercial interest in and understanding of the workings of Global’s technology and advertising business.
- Insights about the current marketplace, through maintenance of strong formal and informal networks/relationships and training.
- A high degree of accuracy and exceptional attention to detail.
- The ability to influence and build the trust of senior management.
- Great communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to work in a collaborative and interactive capacity with a variety of stakeholders.
- Confidence, the ability to work independently and be a ’team player’.
- The ability to set and maintain pace on projects, respond quickly to legal queries, handle multiple simultaneous tasks and meet tight deadlines.
- Experience of delivering training to the business and developing other legal knowledge tools.

Qualification requirements
- Qualified legal practitioner admitted to practice law in England and Wales with a current practising certificate or a qualified foreign lawyer who can be admitted to practice in England and Wales.
- 5+ years PQE with a focus on technology and commercial law since qualification.
- Good academic qualifications in England and Wales or other common law jurisdiction.
- A strong degree, at least 2:1, or equivalent.
