Job description

We have a vacancy for a senior clinical scientist to join our Clinical Scientific Computing team within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCLH.


We are looking for a state registered clinical scientist, but welcome candidates with appropriate experience who could attain registration, via the equivalence route, within 3 years. You would be joining the team at a time of change, as we re-align to meet the challenges facing the Trust, support new digital technology, strengthen our interactions with clinical and technology stakeholders, and develop to provide a full range of scientific computing services.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with the Head & Deputy Head of Clinical Scientific Computing as well as clinical scientists & analysts within Clinical Scientific Computing & other members of staff within Medical Physics. You will develop strong & productive working relationships with clinicians, scientists & clinical managers & also with staff in UCLH Digital Healthcare Technology & their commercial partners.


We have significant commitments to support clinical services in Radiotherapy, Proton Beam Therapy, Nuclear Medicine, Sterile Services, Neurophysiology & Women's Health but have a key role in implementing & managing systems that cover many other clinical areas. You will be part of a specialist team providing some on-call support & extended hours support to Radiotherapy & Proton Beam Therapy.


You will use your organisational skills to manage projects involving multiple clinical, commercial & technical stakeholders, whilst also bringing your technical & scientific skills & your understanding of the regulatory requirements, risk & quality management to evaluate, specify, implement & manage clinical systems.


We have close links with UCL & are accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science to support trainees in Clinical Scientific Computing.

The Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering is a central resource of professional scientific & engineering knowledge & skills within UCLH. Our services support clinical services & research & development throughout UCLH.


The Clinical Scientific Computing Section provides services to clinical & scientific teams & to researchers, predominantly throughout UCLH, across the following areas of work:


Whole life cycle support of medical IT systems. Management of computing infrastructure including desktops, servers, & file storage. Medical device software & healthcare software development. Healthcare data science & healthcare informatics. Support for research, development & digital innovation.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • First and Higher Degrees (e.g. Masters) in a Physical Science, Engineering or equivalent
  • State Registration as a Clinical Scientist (or eligibility to obtain this within 3 years)

Desirable

  • PhD or equivalent research experience
  • Chartered Engineer or Chartered Scientist
  • Membership of a relevant Professional Institute

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of ongoing CPD and in-service training and meetings
  • Experience working in a scientific healthcare environment
  • Experience of the medical application of IT and electronic systems
  • Familiarity with current electrical safety standards for medical devices, e.g. IEC60601

Desirable

  • Experience with both Windows and Linux/BSD
  • Experience in the management of server critical applications such as database servers, security systems and backup systems.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Familiarity and experience in research methods
  • Ability to plan complex activities such as system upgrades that may involve scheduling system downtime and giving consideration to risk to clinical services.
  • Ability to work under pressure

Communication

Essential

  • Ability to communicate clearly, and concisely and sympathetically with patients
  • Ability to liaise, assist and collaborate with medical personnel on clinical research projects
  • Ability to communicate technical material clearly to various personnel
  • Ability to produce accurate technical documentation
  • Ability to negotiate solutions to problems where conflicting views exist
  • Ability to type accurately and at speed

Desirable

  • Record of published papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Record of presenting work at major scientific meetings

Personal and People Development

Essential

  • Ability to work as a member of a team with other clinical staff
  • Ability to manage technical projects
  • Ability to delegate to and supervise junior staff
