Main duties of the job

NIHR Clinical Research Facility (CRF) Senior clinical research fellow in field of vaccines, infectious diseases or immunology. Two Fellowships for adult or paediatric fellows are open to those training in or wishing to develop a clinical or research interest in vaccines, infectious diseases or immunology, or associated field (such as infections of respiratory disease). This will be a Senior role depending on experience and level of current training.

At least 50% of the fellow's time will be spent on research service provision providing medical support and cover to adult and paediatric studies occurring in the CRF and at the Wessex Research Hubs in Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Weymouth. The remaining time will be flexible, dependant on the individuals needs but could be used to provide the time and support for an application to be made for a formal externally funded research training fellowship and registration for study towards a higher degree (usually PhD or MD). The post will be appointed for 1 year in the first instance, depending on the candidate's needs. Where appropriate, funding may be extended by fixed time periods where academic progress is considered satisfactory.

Job responsibilities

The primary role of this post is to assist the Directors and investigators in the running of clinical studies for patients in the CRF and Wessex Research Hubs including early phase clinical trials of vaccines, biological agents and other new drugs.

The post holder will therefore be expected to engage as appropriate with all aspects of the development and conduct of studies, including the submission and maintenance of regulatory documents, the recruitment of subjects and providing medical cover.

The post holder should work to ensure that all studies are conducted to Good Clinical Practice.

Working patterns are flexible depending on the study and visit requirements. Some out of hours working is required and contribution to an on-call study phone rota is required.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Individuals who are keen to learn more about clinical research and are interested in the potential of further research training (MD/PhD).

People who can contribute and work well with our multi-professional team within the CRF.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • BSc (or other intercalated degree) other degrees/ qualifications
  • MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Higher Degree
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Minimum of two years post registration General/Acute (Internal) Medicine/Paediatric experience, of which 18 months must involve admission of acute emergencies and at least 6 months of acute
  • Additional experience or demonstrated interest in a) Infectious Diseases and/or Immunology or b) beyond 2 years General Medical/Paediatric experience. Or c) Some research experience
  • ALS/APLS Provider

  • Proven ability to manage acute medical/paediatric emergencies
  • Proven competence in venous sampling and cannulation
  • Commitment to the specialty of research choice
  • Ability to travel independently between sites
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
