Job description

An excellent development opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and committed individual to gain specialised oncology skills in a clinical role. We are looking for a motivated pharmacy technician to join our diverse Clinical Pharmacy team to develop and deliver an advanced, patient-centred medicines pharmacy service on the Olayan day unit.


You will be a key member of staff working within the Day Unit helping to deliver an effective and safe service by counselling the patients on all their supportive medication and oral chemotherapy.


You must have excellent communicational skills, the ability to work on your own as well as within a team and be highly motivated to deliver excellent patient care.


There will be a requirement to participate in the Saturday service and Bank holiday service.


Applicants must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council; you must be willing to obtain the accredited checking pharmacy technician qualification and the practice supervisor qualification. This is a full-time post and is based on the Sutton Site of the Royal Marsden NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
  1. To develop, maintain and manage the safe, efficient, and cost-effective supply of medicines to patients attending the Oak Cancer Centre.
  2. To deliver quality care to patients attending the oak cancer centre through efficient medicines optimisation including where required effective patient/carers education on medicines, assessment of patient's own medication, medicines reconciliation, individual patient dispensing, and discharge planning.
  3. To support with clinical audits, data collection and implementation of developments to enhance the needs of the patient.
  4. To support the Day Unit Pharmacists with the delivery of any service developments associated with medicine optimisation pharmacy service to meet local and national requirements.
  5. To participate with the dispensing, final checking and issuing of medicines to deliver a safe service when required.
  6. To support any operational tasks as required in line with those of the wider medicines management technician team.
  7. To be the practice supervisor for trainee pharmacy staff when required.

Job description
Job responsibilities
  1. To be responsible for completing the medicine reconciliation process and ordering of medicines as an accredited medicines optimisation pharmacy technician when necessary.
  2. To support and empower patients and carers with self-administration of medicines where possible.
  3. To support the management of the medication supply pathway including the efficient transfer of medicines between day units and wards.
  4. Ensure patients receiving to take out (TTO) medication are appropriately counselled by undertaking specific accreditations in order to carry out counselling for supportive and anti-cancer (SACT) medicines.
  5. To liaise with the clinical unit and pharmacy teams to resolve any technical queries or problems with patients, referring to pharmacist when required.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
Essential
  • Qualified Pharmacy Technician Registered with General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification
  • Medicines Optimisation qualification (HEE LaSE) or equivalent
  • Must be willing to undertake the above qualifications

Desirable
  • Practice Supervisor Course or equivalent
  • Must be willing to undertake the above qualifications

Experience
Desirable
  • Significant work experience (post qualification) in hospital pharmacy
  • Awareness of training competency requirements for technical staff (Level 2 & 3)
  • Experience in training and supervision of trainees
  • Experience of final checking complex prescriptions e.g., oncology, paediatrics
  • Experience of team leader or suitable management
  • Working knowledge/experience of writing SOPs
  • Oncology pharmacy experience
