12 month fixed term Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Infectious Diseases- Target start date September 2025

This is a full time post providing Registrar level cover for the department.

The successful applicant will be expected to carry out all duties of a Paediatric Infectious Diseases (PID) Registrar, participating in all the activities of the PID Unit.

Main duties of the job

St George's Hospital provides the in-patient service for PID with a dedicated ward, Pinckney ward as well as any other inpatient in Paediatrics with any infectious or immunological concern. The PID unit also provides a general PID clinic as well as specialised clinics in HIV, TB, congenital infections, immunodeficiencies and vaccinology and fungal infections. There is an extensive outreach PID support to all District General Hospitals within South West London as well as within Surrey as a consult advice service. There is also a strong antimicrobial stewardship service and pOPAT (Paediatric Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy) provision. The PID unit works closely with the Microbiology team, with dedicated MDTs with them, as well as with the Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Radiology and colleagues with Evelina London Children's Hospital. The PID fellow will participate in all the above activities. The PID unit has also a strong governance and research foundations and encourages our PID fellows to participate in audits, service improvement projects and to strengthen their research profile as we have a link with the Centre for Neonatal and Paediatric Infection (CNPI) at St. George's University of London (SGUL).

About us

St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust is one of the largest healthcare units in the United Kingdom accommodating around 1170 beds and treating around 80,000 inpatient and day cases, and over 300,000 outpatients annually. It provides general acute services together with specialty services including neurosciences, cardiothoracic, and specialist children's services.

The department has its own outpatient's area, child development centre and occupies 5 wards comprising 71 inpatient and daycase beds which are used for children with both medical and surgical conditions including ENT and Ophthalmology, along with 10 Paediatric Intensive Care beds. There are 50 consultants and a fully staffed compliant middle grade and ST rota, composed of grid trainees, regional trainees, fellows and F1 doctors.

  • The successful applicant will be expected to carry out all duties of a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Registrar, with no out of hours activities.
  • To participate in the different academic meetings in the unit.
  • To participate in the regular programme of audits and service improvement.
  • To have responsibility for the Health, Safety and Welfare of self and others and to comply at all times with the requirement of the Health and Safety Regulations.
  • To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments.
