Applications are invited to apply for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Neurosurgery based at King's College Hospital Foundation Trust. The paediatric neurosurgical senior clinical fellowship is aimed at experienced neurosurgical trainees. The purpose of the post is to provide experience sufficient to allow a successful fellow to offer himself/herself for appointment to a consultant position involving a substantial commitment to paediatric neurosurgery.


The fellow will work closely with and under the supervision of the paediatric neurosurgical consultants. The fellow will be expected to supervise the paediatric neurosurgical registrars and to facilitate the training they receive. They will have responsibility for the patients on the ward under the paediatric neurosurgical consultants (both paediatric and adult patients given the mixed practice of all our paediatric consultants). They will be expected to participate in the multi-disciplinary team meetings as well as clinics and theatre sessions. The fellow will have ample opportunity and will be expected to lead on and participate in research projects, presentations (national and international), publications in peer-reviewed journals and service improvement projects. The fellow will also be encouraged and expected to actively get involved in the teaching of their junior colleagues and medical students.

Job responsibilities

The fellow will participate in the general neurosurgical rota (tier 2) on a 1 in 6 basis. They will also be expected to share responsibility for the paediatric neurosurgical patients outside of strict rota commitments. There is a formal training/teaching program for the registrars. Although there will be no obligation for the fellow to participate in this program, it may be to the fellows advantage or to the program's benefit, for him/her to do so from time to time.


The paediatric neurosurgical service consists of 5 consultants with a major sub-specialty interest in paediatric neurosurgery, 1 paediatric neurosurgical senior clinical fellow, 1 clinical research fellow, 3 paediatric neurosurgical registrars / registrar equivalent, a paediatric registrar and a paediatric SHO. We are also supported by 5 excellent dedicated Neuro-Paediatricians on-site at Kings and Clinical Nurse Specialists. We also work in extremely close collaboration with our colleagues at the Evelina Children's Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital.


The unit is extremely active in translational/clinical research with many opportunities.


Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for registration with the GMC
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent

Desirable

  • BSc, MD or PhD

Previous experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience in general neurosurgery
  • At least close to completion of CCT

Desirable

  • Exposure to paediatric neurosurgery and commitment to the sub-specialty
  • CCT

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential

  • Knowledge, experience and competence in elective and emergency neurosurgery
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to organise one's self & own work
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Evidence of participation and active involvement in an audit project/ research
  • Experience of and ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Previous publications/ presentations
