Job description

Senior Clinical Fellow in Liver Critical Care

The Royal Free Hospital Intensive Care Department is looking for a motivated senior clinical fellow to join the team. You will join nearly 50 other resident doctors providing medical cover to our critical care service, with the majority of your clinical work being based in our Liver Critical Care Unit.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate an interest in liver critical care or liver research and previous experience in intensive care medicine is essential.

The post is best suited for the following candidates:

  1. ICM, Medical or Anaesthetic doctors planning to take time out of higher specialist training
  2. Post CCT Trainees looking to develop their experience in liver critical care and liver research prior to obtaining consultant posts

Trainees considering an out of programme experience need agreement with the relevant Specialty Training Committee and Deanery.

The post is for a minimum of 12 months, commencing August 2025 and is based at the Royal Free Hospital site in Hampstead, London.

Main duties of the job

In participating in the clinical activities on the ICU, the post holder will expand on his/her experience of:

  • Resuscitation of the sick patient
  • Communication with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Criteria for admission and discharge from critical care
  • An EBM approach to, and an application of care bundles, to the management of critically ill patients
  • Recognition and management of the critically ill patient
  • Recognition and management of acute medical emergencies
  • Supporting the sick patient to prevent further deterioration and hence the need for admission to Intensive Care
  • Circulatory support, advanced respiratory support and renal replacement therapies
  • Practical procedures including arterial and venous cannulation, the use of ultrasound
  • The interpretation of complex monitoring used in intensive care
  • The management of patients following complex major surgery
  • Identification of patients who will benefit from Intensive Care
  • Management of complex ethical issues and the delivery of difficult news to relatives
About us

The Royal Free is a tertiary hepatology, HPB and liver transplant centre covering a wide geographical area. We have a world leading Interventional Radiology Service for elective and emergency cases, including performing one of the largest number of TIPS procedures in Europe. Since 2019, the liver transplant service has grown steadily, reaching over 140 liver transplants annually. Our busy renal unit is the largest in the North central sector, providing secondary renal services to the local population. Our heart attack centre has over 1200 activations per year, with 450 primary angioplasties. The Royal Free Hospital is one of two principal Contact HCID Treatment Centres and one of five interim Airborne HCID Treatment Centres in England.
