Senior Clinical Fellow in Community Paediatrics

Whittington Health are looking for a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+) in Community Paediatrics to join the Haringey Community team. This is a less than full time post, 0.6 full time equivalent. The department offers excellent experience in Neurodisability and Safeguarding with the flexibility to offer the right candidate a bespoke timetable that reflects their interests.

The post holder will be based at the Tynemouth Road Child Development centre in the vibrant Seven Sisters area in Haringey, which provides assessment and intervention for children with a wide range of special needs and disabilities.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team of community paediatricians and allied health professionals to provide a comprehensive community child health service to the paediatric population in Haringey. The post holder will be supervised by identified leads for all aspects of community paediatrics including Children Looked After, Safeguarding, Neurodevelopment, Neurodisability, SEND and Autism.

There is no out-of-hours on-call commitment in this post.

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties:

  1. Neurodevelopmental Clinic - includes neurodevelopmental assessment, medical assessment as part of Education Health and Care Plan needs assessment. We do joint assessment with therapists when children have complex needs.
  2. Autism Clinic - includes medical assessment of children who are undergoing diagnostic assessment for autism.
  3. Special School Clinics - The post holder will do clinics at one of the special schools in Haringey with support from the special needs school nurse. This will include medical assessment and management of children with complex medical and developmental needs.
  4. The post holder will contribute to the child protection rota as part of the Community paediatric team. This involves being the on-call clinician for safeguarding from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. The clinician will take part in strategy discussions with Social Care and child protection medical assessments. The post holder will be supervised by a senior member based on their experience.
  5. Children in Care Clinics - The post holder will do initial and review health assessments for Looked After Children.

Teaching:

To contribute to departmental teaching and to the teaching of students particularly in relation to community child health services.

Audit, Quality Improvement and Service Improvement:

To engage in departmental projects and initiatives to improve services, clinical practice and guidelines.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • GMC registration
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Post graduate study in community paediatrics or neurodisability
  • Previous experience in community paediatrics

Experience

  • Experience in paediatrics with a good understanding of paediatric conditions
  • Good understanding of child development
  • An understanding of the role of a paediatrician in multidisciplinary working and working with other agencies.
  • Experienced in the holistic assessment of children's health needs and able to provide a written report detailing this information.
  • Experience in managing children with complex medical/ neurological/ developmental needs
  • Experience of working with Looked After Children
  • Experience of doing child protection medical assessments
  • Experience in autism assessment as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary team and with multi-agency partners

Skills

  • Good clinical skills in paediatrics
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including report writing.
  • Training in formal developmental assessment (Griffiths, Bayley, etc)

Management

  • Demonstrates good leadership skills
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and support a multi-professional team and be able to work effectively and sensitively within it
  • Awareness and understanding of changes in NHS organisation
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Experience of inter-agency work with Social Care, Education and other stakeholders

Education and training

  • Commitment to learning and continuing professional development
  • Evidence of commitment to training, e.g. formal teaching/ training sessions
  • Completed audits or quality improvement projects that have had a positive impact on clinical practice
  • Understanding and proven ability to apply research finding in a clinical/ organisational context
  • Completion of research and published.
