Job description

The appointed Clinical Fellow (CF) will provide specialist care to breast patients with senior support and will work alongside Breast Consultants, Associate Specialists and Doctors in training, in the provision of a high-quality elective, urgent and emergency Breast service for the patients attending Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The appointed CF will have no On Call commitment but will assess and manage emergency breast patients during working hours. The appointed CF will be able to work independently and unsupervised but escalate and ask for support when required.


The wider Breast multi-professional team includes Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Radiologists, Cancer Nurse Specialists, Physician Associates, Radiographers and other healthcare professionals contributing to the care of Breast patients.


Timetabled training opportunities in theatres and clinics.


Participate in audits, research projects and publications.


Participate in CME, MDT, M& M.


Perform the clinical duties expected of a CF at a level of ST7/8 in Breast Surgery. Take part in parts of the treatment (as allowed within current regulations) & assessment services of the dept as & when requested & work within the policies & procedures of the org.


Main duties of the job

Take patients history & perform physical examinations of a patient. Record the history & exam in the medical records (as per dept & hospital standard of care).


Work collaboratively with the clinical team to encourage & ensure good working relationships.


Deliver supervised & unsupervised outpatient clinics.


Deliver supervised & unsupervised outpatient procedures.


Communicate with GPs & other health professionals the outcome of clinical appts in a timely fashion.


Contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice & national guidelines.


Fully document all aspects of patient care & complete all req'd paperwork.


Support & contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries.


Develop & maintain specialist medical knowledge. Keep up to date with current guidelines & maintain best practice.


Provide highly specialised advice concerning care - accountable for direct delivery advice to the multi-disciplinary team across organisations, primary & secondary care & accountable for ensuring good service delivery.


Frequent concentration with work pattern being unpredictable - concentrating for patient assessment, interruptions to deal with other clinical or service issues. Some report writing & attending meetings.

Training is integral to the department, with supervision and mentorship. Study leave entitlement (financial and time) provided.


Job Plan

This is a part time post (32 hours) with no On call commitment.


Managerial/Organisational Relationships

The post-holder will be managerially responsible to the Service Line Clinical Director for Breast Services, and professionally responsible to the Medical Director.


The post-holder will be required to comply with all Trust Policies, notably in relation to job schedule, appraisal and leave, in line with Departmental and Trust objectives.


Key Working Relationships

The post holders will interact with breast surgery, breast oncology clinical teams, nursing, breast imaging and admin teams as well as with other departments and healthcare staff in the hospital, and with General Practitioners.
