A Senior Clinical Fellow is sought to work as part of the Emergency General Surgery team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. The successful candidate will be a senior registrar equivalent with experience in General, Upper GI & Laparoscopic Surgery looking to further develop their knowledge and skills in this area.
Main duties of the jobThe candidate must have achieved, or be working towards their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent. Working as part of the EGS Unit, the post-holder will work with senior consultant colleagues, CNS, dietitians, psychologists and endocrinologists to deliver excellent care for our patients. While the post is not formally recognised as a training post by the deanery, excellent teaching and training opportunities exist for the successful candidate.
The post-holder will undertake Emergency General Surgery on-call duties.
The post-holder will be required to undertake further General Surgery (theatre lists and clinics) service commitments as required.
Please note: Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.

Job descriptionJob responsibilitiesClinical: The successful candidate will be expected to administer the day-to-day running of the Emergency General Surgery firm and to supervise, help, and instruct the junior doctors as part of this team. The successful post holder will be expected to assist and manage the inpatients as well as taking referrals from ED and other departments. The candidate will also be expected to be part of the on-call rota for General Surgery.
Teaching: Although these appointments are not accredited for training, the appointees will be expected to participate in some of the educational and training programmes within the department and the hospital.
Research: Several clinical research projects are in progress and ample opportunities exist for presentation and publications to the learned societies.
Audit: SCFs will be encouraged to carry out audit projects with the support of the audit department and must attend the regular department audit sessions.
Administrative: Offices and administrative services are available.
Annual LeaveAnnual leave must be booked at least 6 weeks in advance at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Annual leave will not be granted if it includes a weekend on-call, except in exceptional circumstances. Except for exceptional circumstances within the first 6 weeks of starting the post, all leave requests require six weeks notice.

Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential- MRCS or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- Working towards completion of CCT (or equivalent)
Desirable- Professional qualification - FRCS
ExperienceEssential- Experience at registrar level for General Surgery, especially emergency surgery in NHS.
- Experience of audit and research
- Evidence of Teaching ability
- Evidence of Strong verbal and written skills
- Demonstration of keeping up to date with: General, UGI, Bariatric and Emergency Surgery
Desirable- Experience in Bariatric Surgery
