The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Cargo and Freight Underwriter to join the team of a leading specialty insurer. You will be responsible for managing a portfolio of marine risks, including complex multinational accounts, while delivering profitable growth in line with the company’s strategic objectives. This role offers the opportunity to build strong broker relationships and contribute to developing a high-quality underwriting portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a profitable portfolio of Marine Cargo and Freight risks, including complex, multinational cases.
  • Work directly with brokers and intermediaries to develop and implement joint business plans that align with company strategy.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to less experienced underwriters, acting as a referral point.
  • Deliver on-site underwriting decisions within your delegated authority.
  • Develop and maintain strong broker and client relationships to drive new business opportunities.
  • Plan and manage your workflow to meet customer service and credit control targets.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, ensuring compliance with company guidelines, regulatory standards, and conduct risk frameworks.
  • Deliver technical presentations and represent the company at industry events when required.
  • Contribute to maintaining a balanced and profitable underwriting portfolio through effective risk selection and pricing.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting strategy, technical pricing, and risk assessment.
  • Track record of managing complex, high-value accounts, including multinational placements.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to influence key stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior underwriting staff.
  • Sound knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements (FCA/PRA), including Consumer Duty principles.
  • Commercial awareness and a customer-focused approach to underwriting decisions.
  • Strong planning, organisation, and problem-solving abilities.

Education & Professional Qualifications:
Degree-level education and/or relevant professional qualifications (e.g., ACII).
