Senior Biomedical Scientist / Training Lead

We are seeking an experienced and qualified HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Public Health Wales Screening Division Laboratory as a Senior Biomedical Scientist, responsible for leading the Cervical Screening Human Papillomovirus Virus (HPV) testing section of the laboratory as well as being the training lead to support the training and development of staff, including two trainee biomedical scientists.

This is a permanent post and is an exciting opportunity to become involved in delivering world-class screening programmes as part of Public Health Wales.

This is a permanent position and is intended to be a full-time role although part-time and flexible working will be positively considered.

The Public Health Wales Screening Division Laboratory, based in Llantrisant, South Wales, provides multidisciplinary testing services to both Cervical Screening Wales and Bowel Screening Wales, as well as offering an all-Wales Symptomatic FIT testing service for the investigation of colorectal cancer to participating Health Boards. The laboratory is UKAS ISO15189 accredited and IBMS approved for training.

Main duties of the job

This role will require the successful candidate to take on the responsibilities of the Section Lead for the Human Papillomovirus Virus (HPV) testing section of the laboratory. They will be required to lead a team of biomedical scientists and laboratory support staff in delivering high quality testing. The laboratory is equipped with Roche Cobas platforms and around 150,000 tests are performed annually. The post holder will also be required to be the laboratory Training Lead, responsible for supervising the successful delivery of training to a range of staff, including two trainee Biomedical Scientists.

The ideal candidate will need to be adaptable, enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities. The post holder will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills. They will have experience of supervising laboratory support staff and operating complex equipment and analysers. Experience of delivering training would be an advantage and support and training to achieve the IBMS training certificate will be provided if the successful candidate does not already have it.

We are looking for candidates to support our multidisciplinary team and would welcome interest from candidates with suitable experience in cytology, virology or biochemistry. The NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology is desirable, but training towards this qualification will be provided if needed as this will be an essential requirement of the role.

Job responsibilities

Flexible working patterns are supported where possible but the successful candidate will be required to participate in a rota system covering an extended working day from 7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, with a need to provide cover to 5pm at least once per week.

Qualifications

• Specialist portfolio or equivalent experience in relevant area (e.g. cytology, microbiology, biochemistry)
• Either a higher level qualification (e.g. MSc in relevant area) or equivalent experience and expertise
• Appropriate degree and HCPC registration in Biomedical Sciences
• Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional and personal development
• IBMS Certificate in Expert Practice in Training or equivalent knowledge and skills
• Management qualification or equivalent knowledge and skills

Experience

• Significant and relevant post registration experience
• Experience of working within an ISO 15189:2012/22 accredited (or equivalent) quality management system
• Experience of quality management
• Experience of training provision
• Managerial / supervisory experience

Skills

• Ability to effectively contribute to management decisions within a laboratory
• Ability to identify and support training requirements
• Ability to handle and interpret complex data from a variety of sources
• Ability to work autonomously and make decisions based on their knowledge, responsibility and authority
