Senior Biomedical Scientist - Section Lead Haematology and Blood Transfusion

The NHS Highland Oban General Hospital Blood Science Laboratories comprising Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry is looking for a section lead in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Oban is a busy west coast town surrounded by scenic countryside but only two hours from Glasgow. It has good rail and road links to the major cities and is also the centre for many island ferries offering a fantastic lifestyle for those that enjoy the outdoors.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with proven Haematology and Transfusion training and management skills. This is an opportunity to develop your technical and managerial skills within a supportive team environment at the Oban General Hospital Haematology / Transfusion Department.

Applicants will be considered from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists educated to Masters level in a relevant discipline. The successful candidate must have an IBMS Higher Specialist Portfolio or relevant Biomedical Science MSc or equivalent, and 3 years post higher qualifications.

You must have experience working in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory and a full UK drivers licence. Experience of MHRA/BSQR and attainment of the BBTS Certificate in Blood Transfusion are desirable.

As section lead, you would be responsible for maximising service provision, including the delivery of a safe and effective service, and ensuring that all local and national guidelines and targets are adhered to and met e.g., Audits, quality management, training, and helping to achieve and maintain our ISO 15189 accreditation and Blood Transfusion BSQR requirements.

The post is for full time permanent Band 7 of 37 hours per week and, once trained and competent, there will be an additional requirement for out of hours participation (On call weeknights and weekends) to ensure a 24/7 service provision. Training in Biochemistry will be given to allow for this.

If you hold the required experience but do not have the appropriate higher qualification we would consider appointing to this post with Annex 21 applied. Annex 21 is paid as a percentage of the fully qualified rate during the period of training as follows:- Year 1: 60% of the pay band maximum; Year 2: 65% of the pay band maximum, Year 3: 70% of the pay band maximum; Year 4: 75% of the pay band maximum. Should you fail to complete the training and qualification required for this post the duties of your post may be reviewed.

There will be a requirement to attend interview in person at the Oban Hospital as there will be a practical component and a presentation.
