As a Senior Biomedical Scientist, you will be working in the Microbiology department on the Isle of Wight for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic, HCPC registered candidate with MSc and Specialist Diploma or equivalent in Microbiology with extensive experience. Working with other senior staff, you will be responsible for the general daily supervision of staff, ensuring they maintain scientific and professional standards and work to departmental policies and procedures.
We are an approved training laboratory for Specialist, Registration and Support Staff qualifications. The department has a strong training ethos and further relevant qualifications will, wherever possible, be supported.

To prioritise, plan and organise your own work and the work of all grades of staff within the Microbiology department on a daily basis ensuring accurate and timely service. To support the laboratory by working with all technical, clinical and support staff for the smooth running and delivery of an efficient laboratory service. To provide cover for routine biomedical scientist work as required, validations/verifications and to act as a mentor to provide a high quality diagnostic Microbiology service. Organise maintenance, service and calibration of laboratory equipment. Maintain safe and efficient working conditions in the department.
To carry out all work to standards laid down by appropriate professional bodies including the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and help the department maintain its ISO standard 15189:2022.
The department has a well-equipped laboratory offering a comprehensive service including bacteriology, molecular diagnostics, Virology/Serology and Mycology.
The successful candidate will be reliable, enthusiastic, motivated and forward-thinking. They will demonstrate good interpersonal skills and must be a team player. Candidates must have an appropriate post-graduate qualification, current HCPC registration and at least 3 years previous experience of working in an NHS Microbiology laboratory at a Specialist BMS level. Previous experience of managing change projects within a clinical laboratory will be an advantage.
You may be expected to participate in the weekend, bank holiday and on-call rotas as required by service needs.
