About the role: Primary Purpose:

The successful applicant will be responsible for the development of proteomics and RNA-based assays to support a precision medicine program for rare neurological diseases under broad direction from Prof. Petrou. The applicant will have strong problem-solving skills and expertise to oversee workflows for a research team and take leadership over outputs to meet objectives and milestones. The applicant will have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to proficiently and confidently share key findings with internal and external stakeholders with different levels of technical expertise.

The candidate will be responsible for:

• Conducting laboratory-based research activities, under broad direction, to meet objectives and milestones in a major research program.
• Producing outputs including reports, presentations, journal articles (with a growing number of lead author articles), conference and seminar papers, and materials which support the achievement of milestones and key deliverables in drug discovery projects.
• Supervising employees and supporting the career development of team members.
• Maintaining relationships and collaborating with researchers internal and external to the Florey.
• Supervising the research of less senior research staff to meet deadlines with research outputs of the highest standard.
• Attending, leading, or contributing to professional activities including conferences, seminars, committees, and panels.
• Providing support to team members and carrying out other duties as reasonably requested.
• Modeling and promoting the Florey values.
• Supporting the collective vision and mission of the Florey.

This position is a fixed term, full-time with a contract ending on 30 September 2025. The role attracts an annual salary offer ranging from Senior Research Fellow (SRF1) $126,903 to Senior Research Fellow (SRF1) $146,328, commensurate with experience.

About you:

The successful candidate will have:

• Doctoral qualification in biochemistry or a related field.
• Demonstrable professional achievement in the field of research.
• Extensive experience and expertise with qPCR and digital PCR.
• Experience in mass spectrometry and protein quantitation and detection techniques.
• Experience with short and long-read RNA sequencing techniques.
• Significant postdoctoral experience in a related field of research.
