Job description

Senior Assistant Technician - Radiotherapy Technology (XR04)

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic engineering technician to join our team of clinical technologists in Radiotherapy Technology Services (RTS), part of Medical Physics and Engineering sited in the Oncology Clinical Service Unit at Bexley Wing, St. James's University Hospital, Leeds.

You will work collaboratively to assist our engineering teams in providing specialist medical engineering services to support the clinical radiotherapy service and wider organisation, whilst following an engineering technologist training programme.

The post holder will spend time in each of the specialist teams in RTS to learn and develop skills in electronics, computing, and mechanical engineering. They will support the clinical radiotherapy service through the repair and maintenance of cancer treatment and clinical computing systems as well as building the knowledge and skills to support the design and development of devices to improve patient care and staff experience throughout the hospital.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong willingness to learn, good team working skills, the ability to use their own initiative, and engineering proficiency.

Applications are also invited from candidates who are within 12 months of obtaining a Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science; they may be appointed to a lower grade until those qualifications are achieved.

Main Duties of the Job

The main duties of the role include:

  1. Carrying out supervised maintenance tasks on medical equipment.
  2. Carrying out supervised production of custom-made treatment devices and manufacture of other medical and non-medical devices.
  3. Carrying out supervised work equipment maintenance, store area management, controlled documentation, and controlled software management.
  4. Developing knowledge and skills to become a valued member of the radiotherapy technology services team.
  5. Maintaining accurate, detailed, and timely records relating to design and development work as well as day to day medical equipment maintenance.
  6. Supporting the training of medical engineering apprentices.
  7. Suggesting improvements in practice and participating in the improvement of work processes.

The successful candidate will work closely with our multidisciplinary team of engineers, clinical technologists, therapy radiographers, and medical physicists, as well as engaging and collaborating with patients and clinicians on projects aimed at enhancing clinical services.

Radiotherapy Technology Services (RTS) is a group within the Radiotherapy Physics section of the Department of Medical Physics and Engineering at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. RTS staff collaborate with clinical and scientific users of radiotherapy equipment to provide equipment management and related technical services.

The four teams in RTS; Clinical Computing, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering and Technical Services, collaborate to carry out activity in multidisciplinary workgroups.

Technical

  1. Provides clinical technical services and technical advice for radiotherapy technology users.
  2. Carries out supervised maintenance and calibration tasks on medical equipment.
  3. Assists in providing technical services for research & development activities.
  4. Produces custom-made treatment devices and manufactures other medical and non-medical devices per local procedures and work instructions.

Quality Assurance

  1. Participates in the RTS ISO 9001 quality system and complies with the quality policy, quality manual, related procedures, work instructions, and Medical Devices Regulations.
  2. Assists in quality system administrative tasks, including calibration and inspection or test & measuring equipment calibration.

Management of Information

  1. Accurately records all relevant information and maintains records according to Trust and departmental procedures, often in electronic format.
