Senior Android Engineer

Sainsbury's
London
GBP 50,000 - 90,000
Job description

We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say we have the most exciting data set in the country. And from the insights gained, we build scalable, high-performance products using cutting-edge technology that give our customers an amazing shopping experience – like our award-winning Smartshop app. In an inclusive, agile environment, you’ll have the space to be curious, to experiment, and to solve real-world challenges. And you’ll get to see your creations in the hands of millions of people across the UK.

As a Senior Engineer (Android), you’ll be part of one of our Engineering teams, applying architectural and engineering principles to define and deliver technology that will better customer experiences, improve efficiency and reduce business costs, helping us to lower prices. With your technical craft, curiosity and experimentation, you’ll use judgement to apply specific techniques to deliver outcomes that support our customers.

We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We’d also like you to be yourself - analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll be a role model for best practices, championing a customer centric mindset and a passion for finding creative ways to solve problems, mentoring fellow engineers as a progressive member of the engineering community.

More about the role

  1. You’ll lead the design and development of large-scale high performance services using technologies such as Android and Kotlin.
  2. You’ll work in a T-shaped way, doing mostly your Android specialism but have the opportunity to drive the overall testing strategy.
  3. You’ll contribute to the entire product development lifecycle, from roadmap, to delivery, to potential decommissioning too.
  4. You’ll help to drive the product technical roadmap through a deep understanding of technology and your product.
  5. You’ll lead the design and support of services that enhance Sainsbury’s capabilities.
  6. You’ll be part of a collaborative team that highly values empathy and team spirit.
  7. You’ll utilise Test-Driven Development and Pair Programming, where appropriate, and provide coaching to more junior engineers on development practices.
  8. You’ll work in a lean environment to deliver early and often.
  9. You’ll guide, support and enable performance within the team through providing technical knowledge, ideas & mentorship.

More about you

  1. You possess great expertise in engineering practice, including deep knowledge of engineering and architectural principles.
  2. You are an expert in writing great quality Kotlin code for Android.
  3. You have proven experience of software design and implementation, security, cloud services and CI/CD.
  4. You’re driven and constantly striving to improve your own knowledge, the team and the division.
  5. You’re empathetic and work well with others, and you’re highly collaborative in your ways of working.
  6. You are an advocate of agile/lean delivery methodologies.
  7. You have a passion for delivering solutions to customers, owning the whole Software Development Lifecycle.
  8. You keep up to date with industry trends and emerging tech.
  9. You excel at both coaching and mentoring other developers around you, and can adapt your style to suit the individual.
  10. You can confidently lead complex technical discussions and implementation, and bring the team with you.

Benefits

As well as lots of on-the-job training and endless opportunities, you’ll get:

  1. Colleague discount across our multi-brands – Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat.
  2. Holiday allowance.
  3. Bonus scheme.
  4. Pension plan.
  5. Special offers on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers and more.

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how, where and when they work, combining remote and collaborative working with a flexible approach to hours, giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.

Qualifications

We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer, so you’ll be welcomed whoever you are and wherever you work. Around here, there’s always the chance to try something new - whether that’s as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business - and we take development seriously and promise to support you. We also recognise and celebrate colleagues when they go the extra mile and, where possible, offer flexible working. When you join our team, we’ll also offer you an amazing range of benefits.

Responsibilities

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. Think about the scale it takes for us to feed the nation. The level of data, transactions and variety it involves. Then you’ll realise that ours is a modern software engineering environment because it has to be. We’ve made serious investment into a Tech Academy and into setting standards and principles. We iterate, learn, experiment and push ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to awesome opportunities in everything from AI to reusable tech.
