Our client, a major UK retail bank, provides every day banking services to over 17 million retail customers. The bank's expertise and services span across Business Services, Corporate banking, Wealth Management, Group Functions, Retail and Investment Banking.

On behalf of this organisation, AMS are looking for a Senior AI Ethics SME for a 6 month contract based in London with remote work available.

Purpose of the Role:

As the Senior AI Ethics SME, you will lead the development and implement responsible AI guardrails to ensure ethical, transparent, and compliant AI/ML practices across the bank. This role requires a strong understanding of AI ethics, regulatory frameworks, and hands-on machine learning (ML) development experience. As the SME, you will collaborate with data science, risk, legal, compliance, and technology teams to embed ethical principles into AI models and decision-making processes.

As a Senior AI Ethics SME you will be responsible for:

AI Governance & Risk Management -

  • Develop and operationalize Responsible AI policies, frameworks, and guardrails.
  • Assess AI models for ethical risks, including bias, fairness, explainability, and accountability.
  • Establish monitoring mechanisms to track AI model performance against ethical and regulatory benchmarks.

Regulatory & Compliance Alignment -

  • Ensure AI systems comply with global and regional regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, GDPR, FCA, OCC guidance).
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to interpret and implement regulatory requirements.

Technical & Ethical AI Implementation -

  • Provide hands-on guidance to data science teams to mitigate bias and improve model transparency.
  • Design and validate methodologies for fairness, robustness, and explainability in ML models.
  • Advise on ethical AI toolkits and industry best practices for responsible ML development.

Stakeholder Engagement & Training -

  • Work cross-functionally to align AI development with ethical and business objectives.
  • Conduct training sessions on Responsible AI principles and best practices for technical and non-technical teams.

Industry & Research Collaboration -

  • Stay updated on AI ethics advancements and emerging risks.
  • Represent the bank in industry working groups, regulatory discussions, and academic partnerships.

What we require from the candidate:

  • Technical expertise.
  • Experience within AI/ML development, data science, or AI governance roles.
  • Strong experience in building, deploying, and assessing ML models.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or relevant ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • AWS SageMaker.
  • Familiarity with AI fairness, explainability, and risk assessment tools (e.g., SHAP, LIME, Fairness Indicators).
  • Ethical AI & Regulatory Knowledge.
  • In-depth understanding of Responsible AI principles, bias mitigation, and algorithmic fairness.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with experience in cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, actionable insights for senior leadership.
  • Experience in AI governance within financial services or highly regulated industries.
  • Exposure to AI model risk management frameworks (e.g., SR 11-7, NIST AI RMF).
