Senior Adult Safeguarding Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen to support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding and MCA Lead to work as a member of the Safeguarding All Age team, to provide specialist advice to all staff disciplines within the Trust and liaise with external agencies as required.

Main duties of the job

To take a supportive role in Safeguarding work within the Trust through Safeguarding supervision, staff support and training in line with the Kent and Medway Adult Safeguarding procedures.

To support and guide staff on adult protection cases and work in partnership with all agencies providing safeguarding to vulnerable adults. Promote personalised and safe care as part of a prevention strategy. Promote effective responses when harm is detected. Use learning to improve prevention and protection. Empower patients to be heard and support informed consent, supporting the implementation of the Mental Capacity and Equality Act and Deprivation of liberty across the Trust.

Job responsibilities

1. To provide training to frontline health professionals in relation to Adult Protection, Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, promoting good practice and ensuring that staff are aware of their responsibilities in Safeguarding Adults in all settings.
2. To provide specialist advice and support to staff members with Mental Capacity assessments and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
3. To support and advise staff on issues related to Safeguarding Adults, with occasional attendance at strategy meetings and case conferences.
4. Facilitating safeguarding supervision following safeguarding incidents.
5. To support and advise staff on how to present verbal and written reports to strategy meetings and case conferences.
6. To attend any court proceedings, where needed, in association with the Trust legal department.
7. To participate in and lead working groups in order to achieve the Trust's objectives in relation to Adult Safeguarding and the Mental Capacity Act.
8. To work closely with other designated professionals in supporting all activities necessary to ensure that the Trust meets its responsibilities in Adult Safeguarding.
9. Ensure that vulnerable adults and their relatives/carers are involved in decisions affecting their care and wellbeing and in service development. When relatives or carers are absent, ensure that advocacy is engaged in a timely manner.
10. Undertake delivery of safeguarding training.

1. To liaise with Care Group leaders to share and disseminate new developments in the field of Safeguarding, Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
2. To lead on the development and implementation of plans and activities with other agencies to raise awareness of abuse and mental capacity.

1. Participate in the duty system providing advice, support and guidance to staff and multi-agency partners.
2. To liaise with service managers on safeguarding adult issues to ensure consistency across the organisation, providing complex advice and information.
3. Support a culture of acceptance and understanding by all health professionals of their responsibilities for Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and utilise a think family and making safeguarding personal approach.
4. Disseminate the learning from Safeguarding Adult and Domestic Homicide reviews and assist in the implementation of review recommendations for the Trust, including support and advice in developing improvements to policy and process where necessary.

1. To assist with the audit, monitoring, analysis and evaluation of data and complex facts or situations relating to Safeguarding Adults systems and services in order to improve the quality and clinical effectiveness of care for vulnerable adults and their families.
2. To support wards and departments to undertake internal Trust investigations on behalf of local authorities, undertaking quality assurance to ensure a comprehensive report which meets the terms set by the investigation lead.
3. To support the maintenance of databases on the numbers of cases reported and applications made to the DoLs office and IMCA services and to provide feedback to the relevant departments.
4. Assist with the collection of data in any Safeguarding Adult Reviews, participate as an author and panel member in these processes.
5. To undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant Line Manager.

1. Working across all sites, provide a visible and supportive presence for all the Trust's teams for assistance, guidance, specialist support and an effective role model for staff.
2. Maintain effective working relationships and communication with all members of the multi-professional team. Communicate complex information in accessible formats for all staff.
3. To ensure effective communication with all Safeguarding stake-holding agencies through meetings and liaison. This includes the ICBs, Kent County Council and the Kent Police Constabulary.
4. To work in partnership with the ICBs, Strategic Health Authority and other statutory agencies concerning the strategic development of nursing/AHP services.

Person Specification

Qualifications and training

Essential

• Registered Nurse or registered health or social care professional.
• Degree related to professional role or extensive relevant experience and willingness to undertake further education.

Desirable

• Teaching qualification.
• Working towards a first or second level degree qualification.

Skills

Essential

• Demonstrate the ability to be a strong advocate for the welfare, protection and rights of adults at risk.
• Clinical credibility and evidence-based practice.

• Evidence of staff empowerment and development.
• Able to communicate complex information effectively across disciplines and agencies.
• Confident use of IT systems including office programs, email, calendars, spreadsheets and clinical systems.

• Ability to work under pressure and deal with confrontation.
• Able to deliver training to large groups and to communicate this knowledge effectively.
• Evidence of good communication skills, written, verbal and presentation.

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 5 years post-registration experience with at least 3 years Band 6 experience in a leadership role.
• Clear Safeguarding experience, with a highly developed specialist knowledge of the subject area.
• Leading service level change.
• Resolving user concerns effectively.
• Continuous quality improvement.
• Interpreting complex data to write and deliver comprehensive reports.

Desirable

• Willingness to undertake further training.
• Experience of Multiagency working.
• Experience within a community, primary care or commissioning setting.

Knowledge

Essential

• Strong working knowledge of The Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019 along with local, regional and national Safeguarding agenda.

• Risk management and CQC requirements in relation to adult safeguarding.
