Elementa are recruiting for an SEND English Teacher to work at this special school for children with complex learning needs. This specialist education provider supports students across the primary and secondary phases that have encountered trauma in their lives. All students have an EHCP which commonly relates to any/all of SEMH, ASC, trauma and often display challenging behaviour. The organisation focuses on a holistic and creative education approach in order to reintegrate the students into mainstream schooling, or achieve their full potential whilst out of mainstream education. The school has been highly successful at student reintegration (into mainstream schooling) and they have achieved this by using a range of educational approaches which include outdoor learning, Forest School, classroom-based learning, excursions, and practical learning sessions.

The ideal person for this role will have a positive outlook, a resilient & unflappable nature, have a sound understanding of safeguarding, display good working practices when working with vulnerable learners, be able to set clear boundaries, and uphold the school's expectations & policies.

The school is an approved GCSE exam centre and the focus is therefore to find a competent, confident and inspirational English Teacher with good IT skills to join our committed and energetic staff team.

The successful applicant will be expected to safeguard students' welfare, promote and support the educational and therapeutic needs of the students, contribute to curriculum meetings and the whole school development plan, provide one-to-one English teaching to students, support learning staff in delivering follow-up English activities, deliver study plans, record outcomes, and prepare resources.

Can you?

  • Make learning English fun and exciting
  • Prepare young people to be confident in succeeding in the examination process
  • Nurture good relationships with children and staff to provide 1:1 support for learning
  • Provide energetic (sometimes very energetic) Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSE lessons and activities for children with a wide range of special needs
  • Keep children safe and contribute to their health and well-being

The school is led by an inspiring headteacher who creates a positive & progressive learning environment for the students and staff to work in. Clear parameters are set for individual development as their approach is equally focused on preparing young people for life out of education.

Previous experience of positive behaviour strategies or Team Teach training would be an advantage in being considered for this job opportunity. For a successful applicant, free Team Teach training would be offered.

Essential criteria:

  • Driving licence & car owner
  • (Compensated) willing to travel between school sites in Somerset
  • (Compensated) willing to transport students if required in their car; appropriate car insurance required
  • Clear DBS (civil offences may be permissible)

Additional job benefits:

  • Health Assured Employee Assistance programme to all staff members
  • Support with health & lifestyle, legal information, home and work life
  • Staff can access an unlimited confidential telephone helpline for this support
  • Staff also receive a pension with the school paying 3% of their salary per annum

Elementa will be managing all applicants and screening their suitability for the school. Elementa are not a supply agency; we are a schools services & recruiting partner to schools.
