The Security Officer will assist the Library of Birmingham in providing a service to the public, staff, and visitors at the Library of Birmingham operating 24/7. The post is part of a rota system that includes weekends and bank holidays with occasional coverage of night. Shifts are rotated weekly typically working early mornings or late evenings.
As a Security Officer, you will monitor life safety systems, operate the Fire Evacuation lift in emergencies, enforce the Libraries and Museums Act 1964 byelaws, and follow the libraries policy and procedures and those of the Council. You will be responsible for opening and closing the building, digitally recording incidents, completing regular patrols, monitoring CCTV, and working as a team to provide a safe environment for Library users.
The Security Officer role also involves using initiative to find ways to improve customer experience, signposting customers, meeting and greeting, ensuring staff and customer safety, security, and wellbeing while on site, responding to incidents as necessary, and excluding those with behavioral issues from the library as required.
You will work in the Control Room operating CCTV systems, Fire and Intruder Alarm software systems, Lift Control systems, and other software. You will be computer literate and able to enter data into the computer and write reports.
You will perform dynamic risk assessments, using your problem-solving skills to resolve issues that occur during daily operations and liaise with management accordingly.
Security Officers will maintain both physical and procedural security at the library. You will act as the main point of contact for day-to-day security issues working to action and resolve any issues or management requests in a timely manner.
You will be aware of Counterterrorism issues and mitigation measures and be aware of the implications of the PROTECT duty (Martyn’s Law).
There is a requirement for Security Officers to be trained first aiders and to hold the Security Industry Authority Licence. These certifications must be maintained throughout your employment with Birmingham City Council. A CCTV SIA licence is also desirable.
