Job description

Context & Environment

The job holder is responsible for carrying out production processes at the Preston bitumen plant, using the Distributed Control System (DCS) for tasks including (but not limited to) manufacturing, product loading, product transfers, and bitumen/other raw material off-loading. The individual works within a team environment and in a flexible working pattern (with the potential for weekend, anti-social hours & bank holiday working where required). The Seasonal Plant Operator provides full support for Plant Supervisor and Head of Operations and assists in all general operation activities, as assigned.

Activities

  1. Carrying out various plant production process tasks with all appropriate controls and monitoring, and adhering to company regulations/standards with particular regard to HSEQ to ensure compliance with safety protocols at all times.
  2. Following without deviation all written procedures / work instructions specific to the tasks being carried out, using the parameters and manufacturing methods as detailed in prevailing Process Flow Charts (PFCs).
  3. Using the DCS to monitor and control flows, temperatures and pressures.
  4. Controlling of emulsion tank temperatures and monitoring daily emulsion tank testing requirements.
  5. Completing in-process and finished QC testing, in line with defined PFC.
  6. Communicating and interacting with the Plant Supervisor and other colleagues, reporting to Operations and HSEQ on faults/anomalies/near misses/other safety and/or quality concerns and addressing any such issues as they arise.
  7. Participating in formal shift handover meetings.
  8. Recording accurately all process activities in line with companies documented processes, resulting in relevant logs and batch sheets.
  9. Monitoring, blending and transferring of feedstocks and finished products to/from road tankers and storage tanks.
  10. Providing oversight of drivers, contractors and other "visiting personnel" when on site, as required.
  11. Maintaining housekeeping standards throughout the plant and undertaking planned inspections, as required.
  12. Participating in the upkeep of the Company's requirements for the maintenance of accreditations to relevant Safety, Environmental and Quality systems.
  13. Management / organisation of site waste controls.
  14. Monitoring and controlling various parts of the "utilities" systems such as thermal heaters, boilers and support equipment, the waste off-gas systems and recovered oils, catch pit, operation of the compressed air system and the Mowlem Fume extraction plant etc...
  15. Other tasks as directed by management and/or supervisors.

Candidate Profile

  1. Experience of safe plant & manufacturing operations, preferably experience of bitumen operations.
  2. Understanding of all safety, quality & environmental systems.
  3. Trained in specific tasks, including fork truck training (if required).
  4. Ability to carry out daily tasks, to sequence and timelines.
  5. A strong communicator.
  6. Education: basic English; basic Maths; basic IT literacy.
