The Role

Are you an experienced Script Editor looking to elevate your editorial and leadership skills?

Casualty Script Editors advise on all script related matters while working across multiple episodes simultaneously - often up to 4 at a time. They are the custodians of script and wrangle complex storylines with writers whilst fielding notes from a range of stakeholders.

You will dissect scripts and stories to identify issues and work with writers to find creative solutions. You will suggest long term story ideas and carry out checks to ensure scripts are accurate and legally compliant.

A confident communicator, you will independently manage and maintain relationships with writers who may have significant knowledge of the show. You will provide constructive feedback and take a proactive approach to resolving disagreements where necessary.

Importantly, you will be a fan of the show and have a good knowledge of current and past storylines. We are looking for someone who has strong editorial instincts about our scripts and storylines, as well as an understanding of the potential challenges of the role.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Advise on all script-related matters as well as being responsible for managing the relationships between writers and the production staff
  2. Balance competing demands; required to represent the interests of the writer to the production team and ensure that the author consents to major script changes whilst conveying the writers' interests and point of view in their absence
  3. Ensure the writer has access to the editorial brief and any technical or consultant expertise that they require
  4. Generate creative solutions as well as long term story ideas, whilst carrying out all the necessary checks and ensure that all scripts are editorially correct
  5. Raise and resolve Editorial Policy concerns, doubts or conflicting views with the Script Producer
  6. Carry out negative (e.g brand names) and legal checks ensuring that all reasonable action is taken to avoid copyright infringement, libel and defamation issues

What does it take?

  1. Experience of working as a Script Editor, or equivalent editorial position, on a TV drama or continuing drama
  2. Significant experience of generating creative ideas, solutions and treatments, and working with new and experienced writers under pressure and to tight deadlines
  3. Proven ability to utilise strong communication, negotiation, influencing and skills - written and verbal, online and in person - to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  4. Understanding of copyright law, Writers Guild agreements, contracts and the legal implications for production processes
  5. Awareness of the financial consequences of editorial decisions
  6. Thorough knowledge of script sources and the availability and potential of emerging talent
  7. Enthusiasm, demonstrable interest and understanding of continuing drama, especially Casualty
