Job description

The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) Oxford tackles humanity's greatest challenges by turning science and technology into impactful global solutions. The Pathogen Mission highlights EIT's transformative approach, using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and Oracle's cloud technology to create a global pathogen metagenomics system. This initiative aims to improve diagnostics, provide early epidemic warnings, and guide treatments by profiling antimicrobial resistance. The goal is to deliver certified diagnostic tools for widespread use in labs, hospitals, and public health.

EIT is looking for an enthusiastic Scientific Research Associate to join the Pathogens team. This is an ideal position for someone with 2 or 3 years post grad experience who is looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting. The Scientific Research Associate will support ongoing research and development projects, assist in the development of laboratory capabilities, contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and presentations and support the scientific leadership across existing and potential partnerships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out desk-based research to establish the state of the art in scientific areas related to the work of EIT Pathogens
  • Support the Science Team in the development of written materials, including publications, conference presentations and laboratory protocols
  • Assist in scientific studies and experiments by collecting and analysing data under the guidance of the senior scientists
  • Perform routine laboratory tasks such as preparing samples, setting up equipment, and maintaining lab safety protocols
  • Analyse experimental data using software tools. Prepare reports and presentations of findings
  • Provide general day to day support to the wider team
  • Stay current on scientific advancements and technologies related to the field of infectious disease biology, diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology through journals, conferences, and other academic resources
  • Any other duties requested of you by the department
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Experience working in the application of science to translational goals, with a focus on human health
  • Dry lab experience
  • Firsthand experience of working in the field of infectious disease biology, including genetics and epidemiology
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-growth, fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Highly organised with an ability to manage multiple projects
  • An independent, analytical mindset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, inter-personal skills, and the ability to work with a wide range of people and partners from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience with problem solving involving multiple internal and external stakeholders
Terms of Appointment:
  • You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary
  • You will live in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford and are able to commit to working at our Oxford office a minimum of 3 days per working week
  • During peak periods, some longer hours may be required and some working across multiple time zones due to the global nature of the programme
