Job description

Job Title: School Nurse

Location: Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Colorado, Windsor, CO

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Dean of Operations

Work Hours/Days: Part-time or contracted (4-12 hours per week, higher demand at the start of the school year; additional hours upon agreement)

Position Summary: The School Nurse at Ascent Classical Academy is responsible for supporting the health and well-being of students and staff by delivering comprehensive health services, maintaining health records, and fostering a healthy school environment.

Essential Functions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify student health needs and develop Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) as required
  • Implement health care services, providing primary care for students and managing basic health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing)
  • Oversee immunization compliance and ensure reporting to the state
  • Develop and implement crisis intervention procedures for illnesses, injuries, and emotional disturbances
  • Delegate medication administration and train non-licensed personnel on medication procedures
  • Collaborate with parents, Student Services, and other agencies regarding health-related issues, including IEP and 504 meetings
  • Contact parents to discuss student health needs and provide updates as necessary
  • Be available to cover for health technicians during unplanned absences

Consultation and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with educational teams to develop IEPs and 504 plans for students with special health needs
  • Work closely with school administration to manage illness outbreaks and ensure communication with parents and the health department
  • Provide supervision and training for health technicians and other relevant staff
  • Write and maintain protocols for Health Services Program

Program Management and Diagnosis

  • Plan interventions for students with special health needs consistent with their IEPs
  • Assist in identifying students who require special health services and support their individual health plans

Human Relations

  • Foster a positive self-concept among students and promote a healthy school culture
  • Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and staff

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Demonstrate a concern for student health, safety, and overall well-being
  • Maintain accurate student health records

Qualifications

  • Education and License
    • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Colorado
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
    • Special Services Provider's license (School Nurse) required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire
  • Experience
    • 1-2 years of school nursing experience preferred, but not required
    • At least 2 years of experience in a hospital or pediatric setting preferred
  • Certifications
    • CPR-BLS certification required
    • BLS certification preferred
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and staff
    • Ability to handle emergencies and make quick, informed decisions
    • Knowledge of health regulations, including HIPAA and FERPA
    • Professional, calm, and empathetic demeanor with a commitment to student health and safety
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move quickly throughout the school building, walking, standing, bending, or crouching
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds independently, including assisting students with mobility challenges
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and maintain focus during busy times
  • Proficiency in administering first aid, medication, and using medical equipment with precision

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend required meetings and perform other duties as assigned
  • Consistent and reliable attendance, adhering to work hours and reporting in a timely manner to ensure smooth school operations
