Job description

Our client is a market leading scaffolding contractor with a turnover of around £15m. The company owns several businesses that form part of their operations, with scaffolding being the largest division. Our client now has a need for a long-term Scaffolding Operations Manager who will help guide their scaffolding division as they progress with expansion.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Responsibility for day-to-day management of the business operations, site management, logistics, and yard management.
  2. Assisting clients' senior management teams in the overall planning and supervision of scaffolding projects.
  3. Reviewing project plans with clients and ensuring the company's programme of work fits the project plan and variations.
  4. Having the ultimate decision-making authority for site issues relating to labour, materials, management, and disputes.
  5. Managing the organisation and movement of operatives from site to site as required by clients, supported by a team of Scaffolding Contracts Managers.
  6. Attending site meetings with major contractors and other subcontractors, appropriately representing the company while collaboratively working with others to ensure that the client's project is completed as required.
  7. Ensuring all scaffolding works are carried out under Health & Safety guidelines and liaising with scaffolding inspectors as necessary.
  8. Ensuring site accidents are fully reported to the company and client, with all documentation appropriately completed.
  9. Ensuring all on-site method statements and risk assessments are adhered to.
  10. Working with the Commercial Manager and Finance Manager to ensure the company maximises the use of information generated related to fleet management.
  11. Identifying business development/new tender opportunities.
  12. Nurturing the company's relationships with existing and potential clients at all levels of their organisations.
  13. Identifying new business opportunities.
  14. Operatives Recruitment and Training:
  15. Ensuring toolbox talks are regularly carried out and relevant to the company/operatives, ensuring that all training is properly recorded.
  16. In conjunction with the office staff, managing the company's training matrix to ensure all training is up to date.
  17. Identifying training and development opportunities for key operative staff in support of their career advancement.
  18. Managing the recruitment of scaffolders according to the company's policies.
  19. Making recommendations regarding operatives' wage increases each year.
  20. Financial and Business Management:
  21. Ensuring projects are completed on a timely basis and within budget.
  22. Assisting the Commercial Manager with monthly applications for payments, month-end reconciliations, costings/margin reports, and project reconciliations.
  23. Liaising with and maintaining a good working relationship with clients, surveyors, subcontractors, and project managers as necessary to price variations/adaptations and discuss monthly applications for payment and end-of-project accounts.
  24. Supporting the Contract Managers with preparing wage schedules/timesheets each week for operatives.
  25. Participating in the company's internal management meetings.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Proven experience of working in the construction sector, preferably the scaffolding sector.
  2. The ability to communicate, influence, and challenge at all levels to deliver results.
  3. Leadership experience, including experience of managing and developing teams.
  4. Suitable construction industry or professional qualification.
  5. Experience of working with a main contractor or large subcontractor.
  6. Experience of operational processes within large-scale projects.
  7. Strong interpersonal skills; able to communicate at all levels and across the business.
  8. Proactive with a can-do attitude and able to handle tasks and drive results without close supervision.
  9. A team player who actively supports others but also has the ability to work independently.
  10. An advocate for excellence in all aspects of health & safety construction practices and 'leading from the front' (always wearing full PPE kits on site).
  11. Ability to constantly seek new and improved ways to enhance business practices/processes.
