Job overview

This salaried Midlands Dental Leadership Fellow post offers Dentists the opportunity to develop their skills in leadership, management, strategy and project management outside of their normal clinical practice. As well as being able to maintain/enhance your clinical skills without the pressures of UDA targets. On your clinical days you will work in a practice providing general dental care to the local population.

Commencing 1st October 2024 this 12-month position is open to dentists who are fully GDC registered and have or eligible for full inclusion as a Dental Performer on the National Performer List by 4th September 2024.

During the Fellowship you will have the opportunity to acquire, develop and share knowledge and skills in leadership and will be challenged to think and behave differently in your leadership roles. As part of this you will have access to group coaching sessions and a £4000 study budget.

Main duties of the job

0.6WTE Clinical

On clinical days you will be:

  • Providing routine clinical NHS care, without having UDA targets.
  • Nominally expected to complete 2000-3000 UDAs during the year.
  • Supporting host practice & others to become future training practices for Dental Foundation Training.
  • Based at Hereford Dental Care, a new practice in the town centre.
  • Clinical work will include providing a range of treatments including restorative treatment, endodontic and periodontal therapy and oral surgery. All mandatory services on the NHS contract will be provided to the local population. There will also be dedicated slots to see emergency patients requiring urgent care.
  • Emphasis on Preventative Dentistry and working with the local community to achieve this.

During the Fellowship you will have the opportunity to:

  • Acquire, develop and share knowledge and skills in leadership.
  • Be challenged to think and behave differently in your leadership roles.
  • Be led by the NHS England – Midlands, Workforce, Training & Education Dental Team.
  • Work on projects relating to education and training.
  • Network with local LDN, MCN chairs and Regional Chief Dental Officer.

Working for our organisation

Central Hereford Dental Care is a brand-new dental practice located in the Centre of Hereford. Harkamel Gill, Ali Visram and Meera Bhadresa are the owners of the practice who are all practicing dentists in the West Midlands. They are all committed to Postgraduate Training and have a wealth of knowledge having completed qualifications in Restorative Dentistry as well as Endodontics (PG Diploma level). Mr. Gill is a Trainer for Foundation Dentists and has been active in this role for over 17 years.

It is a modern, paperless practice with the latest equipment including the use of digital radiographs and rotary endodontic equipment. The practice is located centrally and has excellent transport links to areas such as Worcester, Gloucestershire, Bristol and Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Who we’re looking for:

Open to dentists who are fully GDC registered and have or eligible for full inclusion as a Dental Performer on the National Performer List by 4th September 2024.

The Fellowship includes a portfolio of leadership components:

  • Preparing the host practice to be a Foundation Training Site.
  • Working with LDN Chair on the local workforce strategy.
  • Working with other Leadership Fellows on collaborative projects.
  • Building links and professional relationships with local/national leaders including MCN Chairs, OCDO, Public Health Consultants, Commissioners.
  • Working with WT&E on training and educational initiatives.
  • Providing the full scope of NHS Dental Services for the local community.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

  • Evidence of professional development since qualification.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  • 3 years experience post qualification working within NHS as a dentist.
  • Evidence of emerging leadership within practice e.g. Undertaking an improvement project in practice, leading training, staff development initiative.

Qualities

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Shows initiative, drive and enthusiasm.
