Location: Gloucester Business Park (Flexible working arrangements available).

Employment type: Permanent full-time.

Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full-time position.

Salary: Competitive salary, dependent on experience, plus bonus and other benefits.

Closing date: Thursday 3rd April 2025.

Sizewell C is one of the largest megaprojects in the UK, at the forefront of the UK's climate change agenda and energy policy. Following the success of Hinkley Point C, the SZC project has obtained planning approval and government financing support, and site preparation activities are ongoing. The project is now seeking private investment with a view to starting construction in 2025. SZC's first top-level safety report, the Pre-Construction Safety Report (PCSR), will enable the release of 2 project milestones: First Nuclear Safety Concrete milestone and Nuclear Island Concrete milestone. Therefore, PCSR's production will be SZC DA's priority over the next few years.

This vacancy is within the Safety Case Branch of SZC Design Authority. The Design Authority Safety Case Engineer will report to the safety case integration group lead of DA and will be responsible for leading the development of the various sections of the PCSR under Licence Condition 14 arrangements. A background in fault studies is desirable to lead on safety analysis sections of the PCSR. Candidates with a broader range of skills are welcomed in anticipation of future vacancies in Safety Case Branch.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. As the owner of the safety case during the design and construction phases, advise the external and internal regulators and responsible designer on the adequacy of the safety case and associated deliverables.
  2. As the section lead for PCSR, govern the technical ownership of responsible topic areas relating to the safety case, set safety case strategy, manage a team of safety case authors and lead sections through safety case life cycle: authoring, peer review, verification, internal regulator, external regulator, nuclear safety committee, etc.
  3. Act as the intelligent customer for the safety case through undertaking technical oversight over the licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning, and operation phases of the station lifecycle.
  4. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including EDF SA, EDF Nuclear Operations, EDF Hinkley Point C, EDF Nuclear Services, the Responsible Designer (EDF SA, Edvance and CNEPE), internal regulators, Office for Nuclear Regulation and supply chain partners.
  5. SZC is a replicated design from HPC. Provide influence and direction to maximize the benefit of replication.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualification and Experience

We are committed to developing people and have comprehensive training courses & programmes. We encourage applications from people from any background, hence the desirable attributes should be considered as a guide, but not an application requirement. We hope that the applicants would have the following skills:

  1. Degree or equivalent in engineering, science or maths.
  2. Experience in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industries is highly desirable.
  3. Demonstrable evidence of complex safety case management/production within the nuclear industry, including design, substantiation, verification & validation, and safety justification of systems, structures, and components is highly desirable.
  4. Knowledge/experience of key related nuclear safety case disciplines is preferred but not essential (Fault Studies, Normal Operations, Classification and categorisation, Civils, Probabilistic Safety, Human Factors, System Reliability, Deterministic Safety Principles, etc.). Candidates with a broader background are welcomed in anticipation of future vacancies opening in the safety case branch.
  5. Ability to identify issues and develop solutions in the context of nuclear plant construction through to operation.
  6. Ability to interpret the big picture, ability to distill a range of source data and analysis to define, set scope and strategically plan the delivery of the safety case.
  7. Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  8. Ability to operate autonomously or as part of a team.
  9. Excellent organization skills.

Sizewell C Limited (Sizewell C) is a nuclear site licensed company whose business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Sizewell C was formerly under the majority ownership of the EDF Group but is currently majority owned by HM Government and operates as an independent company. EDF remains a key shareholder in Sizewell C and the business therefore maintains close links to EDF as a part of its 'nuclear family'.

As a Sizewell C employee, you may wonder why you are contacted by colleagues with an EDF email or see the EDF logo on portals that you access and/or documentation you receive; this is because we have partnered with EDF for the provision of a number of support services whilst we complete a successful transition out of the EDF group.

Additional Information

Join the team at Sizewell C. The power of good for Britain.

It's not every day you get the opportunity to shape the working culture of what will be one of Europe's largest construction projects, while also helping Britain to reach its target of Net Zero emissions by 2050. That's one of the reasons Sizewell C will be unlike anything you've ever experienced before, and you'll need to be an exceptional professional to reach the high standards this critical infrastructure project demands.

The UK is experiencing a nuclear renaissance and Sizewell C - along with its sister project at Hinkley Point C in Somerset - is powering the change. We're ramping up at pace as we look ahead to the Financial Investment Decision in early 2025, and the start of construction soon after. With government fully on board and public opinion shifting significantly in favor of nuclear, there's never been a better time to join our project.

By submitting an application to this role, you acknowledge that you have read and understood Sizewell C's employee privacy policy and EDF's employee privacy policy. Just to let you know, EDF will be processing and sharing information about your application on behalf of Sizewell C.
