Job description

We are seeking skilled and compassionate individuals to join the new NHS Children and Young People's Gender Service (London) in the role of Safeguarding Advisor/Social Worker.

Applicants should have experience in safeguarding within services for children and young people, and of providing specialist advice, supervision, training and support on safeguarding issues.

Applicants must have a Diploma or Degree RN Children, or RN Adult with Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting/ School Nursing) qualification, or RN Learning Disability/ RN mental health with paediatric experience, or be a registered Social Worker. Applicants also must have post registration education in children protection/ safeguarding children module at graduate level or be prepared to work towards this.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a competent, knowledgeable and visible practitioner within safeguarding ensuring the provision of high-quality evidence-based service, for children, young people and adults at risk.
  • Ensure appropriate support to children and young people, their families and the service in terms of safeguarding.
  • Ensure appropriate holistic support is provided through the service and link with multi-agency teams in other services as necessary.
  • To support the development of safeguarding processes and operate within a system to safeguard children and young people, including direct liaison with patient's families and staff.
  • To facilitate good communication and consistency across the service in terms of safeguarding support, including ensuring the regular briefing as required of clinical teams on key safeguarding issues and specific safeguarding cases.
  • To maintain an overview of cases where complex concerns have been notified to the Safeguarding Team to promote safety and well-being of children and young people at risk.
  • Where appropriate support staff to professionally challenge the analysis of others where safeguarding concerns need further escalation.
  • With the support of the Safeguarding Lead, ensure and facilitate good communication and consistency of service provision and development for safeguarding within the service.
  • Act as a visible role model and foster an environment that enhances the patient family and staff experience.

Job responsibilities

The main duties of the job include ensuring the service safeguards children and young people and promotes their welfare. The post holder will assist the service in its requirement to protect children and young people at risk from harm and abuse.

The post holder will also identify and support children and young people and their families who need additional care as well as providing appropriate signposting or referrals to relevant organisations and agencies. The post holder will contribute to the development of training and education for staff to ensure they have up to date safeguarding skills, knowledge, and competence. It is required that the post holder be part of any safeguarding or related governance required (within or outside of the service).

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree RN Children, OR RN Adult with Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting /School Nursing) qualification OR RN Learning Disability/RN Mental Health with paediatric experience OR Registered Social Worker (Social Work England)
  • Post registration education in child protection/safeguarding children module at graduate level and prepared to work towards.
  • Significant experience of working with children.


Desirable

  • Assessing & Mentoring Qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Participation on leadership programme
  • Completion or willingness to undertake a Safeguarding Supervisors course.


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in safeguarding children practice processes and working with complex child protection issues.
  • Experience of contributing to delivering, planning and evaluation of training to groups.
  • Experience of collaborative inter-agency working.
  • Evidence of supporting the learning and development of others.
  • Evidence of participation in governance, including undertaking audit and review.
  • Participation in the development of teaching programmes.
  • Experience of or willingness to undertake training on sound reflective coaching/models of supervision.
  • Knowledge of relevant evidence-based practice and experience of utilising this in practice.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of current safeguarding children legislation and guidance.
  • Awareness of the sensitive nature of safeguarding work including issues of equal opportunities, confidentiality, and information sharing.
  • Knowledge of Modern Slavery, Prevent and Domestic Abuse processes, including MARAC.


Desirable

  • Relevant experience in senior clinical or management role/s.
  • Evidence of working as a supervisor / assessor.
  • Awareness of current adult safeguarding legislation and guidance, including the Care Act (2014), the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act (2019).
  • Experience of working with children or young people who are gender questioning.

  • Ability to offer safeguarding advice and support to staff within own sphere of competence. This will include the ability to empower, challenge constructively and provide a learning environment as necessary.
  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Able to contribute to developing, delivering and evaluating high quality learning packages.
  • Responsive and flexible in meeting the needs of adult learners.
  • IT skills including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Databases.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to promote and demonstrate effective communication at all levels, both written and oral.
  • Evidence of ability to challenge the analysis of others constructively.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
