The Role
Wessex Internet have an exciting opportunity to join us on a 6 month Fixed Term Contract (FTC) as a Civils Operative / Team Leader in one of our regional teams in Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire or Wiltshire. We will also consider employees who wish to work self-employed if they have the relevant documents.

As a team Lead you will be overseeing teams of 2-3 civils operatives and working within our larger Civil Engineering Department. The role will report to the Rural Network Build Manager. Initially your main role will be overseeing the operation of our 2.7ton Kubota diggers, supporting the smooth running of the Vibratory Mole Plough and Directional Drilling teams. Our unique trench-less equipment allows for simple and efficient network build across varying soil types and terrain.

Our successful candidate will have experience within a civils construction role or come from a farming background with experience of using agricultural machinery. Knowledge and experience of working across agricultural land and or experience in excavation works and cabling will support in understanding the challenges faced when building new infrastructure across tricky terrain. The applicant will also have strong people skills and be ready to get involved in whatever their teams need from them, problem solving abilities, excellent communication skills and the desire and passion to lead a team promoting our values.

Responsibilities
Including but not limited to:
Site Assessments & Planning

  • Lead site surveys and assessments to determine project requirements and allocate resources effectively.
  • Identify potential challenges and communicate findings to management.
  • Review and interpret drawings and plans provided by the planning team to ensure accurate execution.
Excavation & Construction
  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of excavation machinery for tasks such as fibre laying, manhole installation, and telecommunication cabinet construction.
  • Ensure machinery is operated effectively to meet project deadlines and quality standards.
  • Conduct and support regular maintenance checks on machinery to prevent downtime and maintain optimal performance.
Health & Safety Compliance
  • Ensure the team adheres to all health and safety regulations and follows best practices at all times.
  • Proactively identify and address potential safety risks on site.
  • Record and report any accidents or near misses and implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
  • Lead regular safety meetings and ensure all team members are up to date with industry regulations and best practices.
Team Leadership & Training
  • Lead and motivate a team of Rural Civil Operatives to deliver high-quality work and meet project deadlines.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Support the training and development of new team members, providing guidance on job responsibilities, safety procedures, and best practices.
  • Monitor team performance and provide feedback to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Requirements
  • A full UK driving license (Essential)
  • Competent using plant and machinery with relevant tickets.
  • Prior experience working on agricultural land, excavation and or cable/pipe works
  • Previous Rural Civils experience
  • Previous experience in leading a small team/ gang (advantageous)
  • Ability to work in a range of field environments
  • Enjoy working outdoors in an active role
  • Work well as part of team
  • Understanding of Health & Safety Regulations
Advantageous But Not Essential
  • B&E trailer license
  • CSCS
  • Street Works / Cable Avoidance

Compensation: £32,000 - £37,000 per annum, depending on experience (based on 45 hour week)
