Overview

Summary: Responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide direct patient care to an assigned group of patients during a shift. Responsible for prioritizing the delivery of direct nursing care using time and resources efficiently integrating a standards-based framework model.

Qualifications

Licensure: State of New Mexico or Compact State Nursing License or Graduate Nurse Permit required.

Academic Preparation:

  1. Degree from accredited academic nursing program (If a program is under conditional status, approval may be granted by system CNO).
  2. Minimum ADN preparation with expectation of BSN completion within 5 years of hire.

Education: Essential: Associate Degree.

Credentials: Essential: Registered Nurse-NM.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting individual patient needs, actions taken and patient responses.
  2. Coordinates patient care through collaboration with the patient/family and healthcare team.
  3. Performs assessments as per unit standards and documents on appropriate data base/assessment flow sheet.
  4. Initiates, utilizes and documents appropriate protocols and standards of care.
  5. Administers medication and treatments as prescribed by physician, or standard protocols and documents according to policy.
  6. Identifies and meets patient and family learning and discharge needs on admission and throughout episode of care.
  7. Evaluates patient progression toward outcomes per unit standards and documents through EOSS etc.
  8. Performs competently in emergency situations.
  9. Delegates or assigns aspects of patient care to healthcare team members commensurate with their validated competency to perform the task.
  10. Assumes responsibility for the clinical supervision of LPNs and non-licensed assistive personnel.
  11. Provides leadership through communication about and validation of patient care.
  12. Assists with various procedures, treatments, surgical techniques or assigns to other healthcare team members as appropriate.
  13. Completes patient population/age-specific/procedure and protocol education and competency testing per unit standards.
  14. Demonstrates competency in required psychomotor skills.
  15. Assists in orientation of new staff or students, and serve as a resource person and professional role model.
  16. Assumes professional responsibility for current nursing structure and clinical standards of care.
  17. Incorporates PHS mission (VVPS) in care-giving activities.
  18. Supports DON philosophies of shared governance and models of care delivery.
  19. Assumes other leadership roles (i.e. relief charge nurse) as required by the department.
  20. Meets professional requirements as follows:
  21. In-service requirements: Age-specific training (care giving, treatment, assessments specific to the age of populations served), mandatory yearly inservice to include BLS, safety training, bloodborne pathogen/infection/TB training.
  22. Performance Standards: Participates in unit/department governance, adheres to PHS dress code for professionals, including display of ID badge, documents own continuing education, maintains positive communication and relationships with patients, peers and other healthcare team members, participates in quality improvement activities, maintains a punctual and reliable attendance record, completes mandatory inservices, competencies and licensure requirements on time, adheres to safety and equipment policies.
