About The Role

The Asset Risk Modelling Lead role sits in the Asset Risk Function, which has the responsibility for forecasting Motability Operation’s key financial risks, including Residual Value and SMR, Insurance Lease Pricing, Economic Capital, as well as producing the customer pricing (Car, WAV PWSS). This role is accountable for managing a team of Risk modellers operating in a matrix operation, ensuring you and your team oversee, operate and develop the models used to deliver Asset Risk forecast outputs across multiple model output and outcome owners, data and product teams.

Reporting into the Head of Economic Capital and Asset Risk Operations, the role is a member of the Asset Risk leadership team with the following key responsibilities:
  • You will support the setting & delivery of the Asset Risk strategy in alignment with the needs of Asset Risk and the wider business.
  • You will ensure the Modelling Team deliverables (BAU and strategic projects) are managed in a matrix way of working approach across the Asset Risk Operational Teams and fellow Asset Risk output owners.
  • You will be accountable for Asset Risk's Model Risk Management framework, ensuring it is appropriate, approved, embedded and evolves for all Asset Risk models relating to, at the very least, residual value forecasting, maintenance spend, insurance, customer pricing, economic capital, with agreed model risk health metrics, documentation, process management and auditing requirements met.
  • You will be accountable for ensuring the modelling team delivers on the needs of all modelling related BAU activities, namely the operation and updating of the forecast models in line with strong governance and pressure sensitive deadlines.
  • You will maintain a deep understanding of, and be responsible for, the model components - design principles, use of data, assumptions, applied statistical and modelling techniques - for all BAU Asset Risk model, and with critical thinking you will challenge and justify these components and outcomes through a business lens, taking joint ownership for the outcomes with the business SME’s.
  • You will jointly own the clear and transparent communication of the models components, modelling insight, the outcomes and output ensuring you and your team effectively bridge the gap between the models and Asset Risk deliverables.
  • You will be accountable for ensuring the Modelling Team are equally as engaged with explaining and owning the outputs and outcomes as they are with operating and developing our models.
  • You will be accountable for ensuring the modelling team delivers their strategic roadmap related items, namely model enhancements and development that deliver on the agreed benefits to the business from evolving internal (tools and systems) and external (trends and technology) landscape, ensuring a strong alignment with explainability and commercial awareness and modelling principles and techniques.
  • You will work with the Asset Risk Leadership Team to ensure the requirements of the Modelling Team are understood, planned and managed for all strategic projects and business as usual activity across the relevant time frames of 12 to 24 months.
  • You will maintain a detailed understanding of the tools and systems which underpin the models, and work with stakeholders to ensure they are managed to meet the current and future needs of the business.
  • You will manage the Asset Risk Model Risk Team and ensure they develop and maintain the skills and passion needed to operate complex forecast models within our governance frameworks, remain engaged, and take pride in effective stakeholder management and communication.
  • You will work with your fellow Leadership colleagues to develop strong Asset Risk colleague engagement & wellbeing through effective communication, development and training, recognition and inclusion.
  • You will develop collaborative and enduring relationships and be an advocate for Asset Risk and our ways of working.
  • You will proactively engage with relevant 3rd parties (industry bodies, commentators and experts) to ensure Asset Risk activities are appropriately aligned with external best practice.

About You

  • Ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders, colleagues and deadlines.
  • Passionate about using data to provide meaningful insight and tell engaging stories.
  • Confident in ensuring data accuracy feeding models, insight and forecasts.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Commercial awareness: Can understand the business environment, market trends, and the financial impact of decisions to align models with the organisation's strategic goals.
  • Ability to develop solutions for complex financial problems.

Minimum criteria

You’ll need all of these:
  • Degree in fields such as Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Considerable experience of managing modelling teams / and or delivering model management activities to a group of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience of coordinating a model risk management framework in a matrix operating model.
  • Considerable experience of building, operating and explaining complex models in a commercial environment.
  • Experience of applying data science and machine learning techniques in to forecast models understood by a variety of stakeholders.
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree in areas like Statistics, Data Science, Business Analytics, or Applied Mathematics.
