Job description

Would you like to be part of a company dedicated to solving one of humanity's greatest challenges-energy production? At the UKIFS, we are at the forefront of cutting-edge research in nuclear fusion, a potential game-changer for sustainable energy.

Nuclear fusion is often referred to as the "holy grail" of energy. With abundant fuel sources found in seawater and experimental results showing that just 1 kilogram of fuel can generate 1500 megawatts of energy, the possibilities are immense. This revolutionary technology could provide virtually limitless, clean energy, solving many of the world's environmental challenges.

As leaders in nuclear fusion research, we are tackling multiple complex challenges and seeking talented individuals to join us in turning fusion energy into a reality. By doing so, we aim to help address global environmental issues and create a future with abundant, sustainable energy.

The UKIFS's goal is to build the first Fusion Reactor to be connected to the grid and remain on.

We are seeking a highly skilled Risk Management Specialist to join the UKIFS here at Culham. This role is pivotal in ensuring risk management activities on programmes and projects are executed to a high standard, adhering to established processes in project, technical, and risk management.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing risk across various programmes and projects, delivering solutions with engineering integrity that align with Nuclear operations.

You will be accountable for advising, supporting, and providing training on the Enterprise Risk Management Process, while working closely with key stakeholders to ensure effective decision making and risk mitigation.

This role requires a proactive approach to risk management, ensuring that risks are identified, evaluated, treated, and communicated in a timely manner to relevant stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Stakeholder Management: Actively manage and engage with key stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration on all risk-related matters.
  2. Risk Identification & Evaluation: Facilitate the identification, characterisation, analysis, evaluation, and treatment of risks related to programmes, projects, and work packages. Aid programme leadership in decision-making by providing key risk insights.
  3. Risk Review Process: Coordinate and support the Risk Review process, ensuring that risk registers are up to date, and that risk descriptors and mitigations are appropriately challenged and moderated.
  4. Liaison with Product Area Leads: Regularly liaise with Product Area Leads to identify emerging risks, trends, and critical risks across programmes and projects.
  5. Technical Risk Analysis: Conduct in-depth risk analysis, working closely with technical leads to evaluate and accept identified risks.
  6. Quantitative Risk Analysis: Undertake quantitative risk analysis through techniques such as SQRA (Semi-Quantitative Risk Analysis) and CQRA (Criticality Quantitative Risk Analysis).
  7. Challenge Mitigations & Burn Down Plans: Review and challenge mitigation actions and burn down plans, advising on improvements as needed.
  8. Tracking Risk Mitigation: Track the completion of risk mitigation actions and ensure that these are included in project schedules as required.
  9. Risk Management Process Standardisation: Support and standardise risk management processes across the business area, ensuring consistency and compliance with UKIFS risk management standards.
  10. Risk Strategy Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of Risk Strategy at the enterprise level.
  11. Chair Risk Review Group: Chair the monthly Risk Review Group meetings and arrange/facilitate risk workshops to support risk owners in managing key risks.
  12. Risk Management Tools Support: Act as the 'Super User' for risk management software tools and platforms, providing support and guidance to others.
  13. Metrics & Reporting: Establish, monitor, and report on risk management metrics, evaluating findings, and presenting them to management as required.
  14. Training & Development: Prepare and deliver training on risk management for those with risk management responsibilities to ensure the effective application of processes.
  15. Support Process Effectiveness: Work with the Head of Risk and Assurance and the risk team to ensure the Programme and Project Risk Process is operating effectively.
  16. Risk Reporting: Provide clear, concise risk reports covering tactical/technical, strategic, and corporate risks, ensuring all risks are captured and reported in a timely manner.
  17. Risk Profile Reporting: Provide a clear summary of the risk profile for STEP, focusing on risk burn down and enabling informed decision-making.
  18. Influence & Decision-Making: Influence internal and external stakeholders and customers, making decisions regarding risk tools and methodologies. Participate in risk approval decisions.
  19. Budget Approval: Approve risk management budget expenditures, including timesheets and purchase orders, through the U4BW system.
  20. Escalation & Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication across the programme, ensuring timely and accurate escalation of issues when required.
