Stoke-on-Trent City Council is seeking compassionate and resilient Residential Care Workers to transform the lives of looked after children.

This role is a fantastic chance to develop your career, with a wealth of learning and development opportunities on offer.

About the job

Stoke-on-Trent is home to over 1,000 children in care. The Council’s service operates nine residential homes which are all rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted.

As a Residential Care Worker, you’ll join one of our small group homes, helping to provide high-quality care that delivers the best possible outcomes for looked after young people.

You’ll work with our residents to help them build independence, while ensuring their safety and advocating for their educational and developmental needs.

You’ll take a restorative approach to work, building relationships that empower children and their families. You’ll contribute to the development of care plans and help to address challenging behaviours, with the goal of enhancing young people’s lives and access to opportunities.

The ideal candidate

To succeed in this role you’ll need to hold a Level 4 or equivalent qualification in Health and Social Care, as well as experience working with children.

You’ll have a good understanding of Children’s Home Regulations and the Children Act 1989, with a commitment to the legislation’s guidance.

You will be patient and understanding, with an ability to approach challenging situations with empathy. In addition, you’ll need to be adaptable, including having some availability for unsociable hours.

You’ll also have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively to childcare planning.
