Job description

About Us At Hounslow

We’d love you to join us at the London Borough of Hounslow! Our people are deeply committed to providing excellent services to our residents, doing all we can to make lives as good as they can be.

We are an outstanding council, serving an outstanding borough.

With brilliant, visionary leadership, a dynamic Cabinet and a can-do culture, we’ve built strong partnerships which have transformed how we serve one of London’s most diverse boroughs. Hounslow is the world in one place and full of potential. We are stepping up for our residents like never before.

About Our Commitment To Diversity And Inclusion

We live by five core values: Lead with Heart, Do New, Pass on the Power, Harness the Mix and Be a Rock. All our work has equality, diversity and inclusion at its very heart, best articulated in “Harness the Mix”. It's about breaking down barriers between our parts and people and unlocking the problem-solving power of our amazing mix of minds. We serve a diverse community, we have a diverse workforce and we are committed to being an inclusive employer.

We work hard to create representation across our workforce and leadership community, we have thriving employee network groups and our learning and development programmes help us lead, model and breathe ways of working that eliminate inequality, inequity, injustice and bias.

As part of this and under our commitments as a Disability Confident Employer, we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate our candidates. There’s space for you to tell us what you need within our application form.

Our Benefits

About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Housing Engagement team as a Resident Engagement Officer (short term, until October 2025). You will work directly with tenants and leaseholders across Hounslow’s Council housing, supporting them to come together in groups to share their experiences and help us improve our services. One day you may be hosting a fun event on a housing estate, the next you could be supporting a group of tenants who are scrutinising a service. The role is varied and busy. No two days are the same.

You will work in a team of three Resident Engagement Officers, sometimes together and sometimes you will be alone leading the conversation with residents. You will work out and about on housing estates, as well as in Hounslow House, and often at evening or weekend meetings, where you get time off in lieu for the additional hours worked.

About The Team You’ll Be Working In

The Housing Engagement team works very closely with Housing staff, sometimes with very senior officers and elected Members. Together we bring residents into joint work with officers to help improve the services to our tenants and leaseholders.

We are part of the wider Engagement and Events team, so we often link up with colleagues who help us to develop consultations, put information on our online information hub, or how we reach out to our younger residents. Occasionally we help with some of the bigger events and ceremonies the Council hosts.

We often work alongside other Council departments or external partners, such as the Metropolitan Police, to develop joint engagement events or workshops.

About You

You will be good at engaging with other people, listening and capturing their views. The views of our residents are vitally important to us so you will be good at reporting on what you have learnt from residents and presenting this information to colleagues. You will be confident at talking in front of a crowd, this could be residents or officers. You will also be able to analyse what you have worked on with residents and present it in a report.

You will need to be able to juggle a number of different projects at once and agree your priorities with your manager.

Managing databases is important and gathering data from residents and holding it securely, with regard to GDPR regulations.

You will have good spoken and written English and be confident working with figures. You will also have good experience of working on computers and digital communications.

Don’t meet every single requirement? We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box. At Hounslow, we realise the ‘perfect candidate’ doesn’t exist. So, if you can do most of what we’re looking for, go ahead and apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or be perfect for one of our other roles!
