The successful applicant will undertake analyses that are required for the diagnosis of children with inborn errors of cholesterol or bile acid synthesis. They will need to be able to undertake analysis of sterols and cholanoids (bile acids and bile alcohols) in plasma, urine and dried blood spot samples using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography - electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). They will also be required to perform mass-spectrometry based diagnostic assays to enable identification of children whose epilepsy will benefit from treatment with vitamin B6. Because the results of analyses are required for diagnostic purposes, the highest standards of sample tracking and quality control are required.
Applicants must have a BSc in biomedical science / chemistry / biochemistry or an equivalent qualification. They must have experience of mass spectrometry and specifically HPLC-electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Candidates must have the ability to efficiently organise their work, communicate effectively and work well in a team.
