The role

This role is to provide essential technical and research laboratory support for the use of interactive virtual reality for protein design, molecular modelling and associated research in the Centre for Computational Chemistry. The role will support research activities by contributing to training in basic techniques and essential core functions in chemical and biochemical applications of interactive virtual reality, and maintenance and use of virtual reality hardware and software, and associated IT. The research centres the use of virtual reality hardware and software for computational chemistry, interactive molecular dynamics, molecular modelling and other computational techniques in protein design.

What will you be doing?

You will support the research teams by providing essential day-to-day operational support for the interactive virtual reality work and carrying out associated analyses and processes as required. Duties will include:

  • Operating, servicing, maintenance and calibration of virtual reality research equipment.
  • Recognising and resolving simple to more complex problems, e.g. fault diagnosis, process improvement in applications of interactive virtual reality for proteins and molecules.
  • Maintaining stocks of VR computational materials and consumables, as well as input into larger purchases, liaising with relevant internal contacts and suppliers to ensure cost effectiveness.
  • Understanding Health & Safety requirements, contributing to risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with all relevant guidelines.
  • Training others in basic processes, e.g. use of virtual reality equipment.

You should apply if

You have:

  • Relevant qualifications in Chemistry or related subjects and experience of working with virtual reality.
  • Good IT skills, and an ability to learn to effectively use relevant new software or IT systems when required.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to deal with and prioritise a range of ongoing tasks at the same time, and to be able to cope under pressure.
  • Ability to carry out procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision towards pre-defined goals.
  • Proven experience of completing relevant tasks to a high level of accuracy, with attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
  • The ability to work with others as part of a team.

Salary: £25148 - £28,081 per annum
